ENGAGING THE AUTOPILOT AND YAW DAMPER
NOTE: Autopilot engagement/disengagement is not equivalent to servo engagement/disengagement. Use
the CWS Button to disengage the pitch and roll servos while the autopilot remains active.
When the
AP
Key is pressed, the autopilot, yaw damper, and ight director are activated (if not already
engaged).TheightdirectorengagesinPitchandRollHoldmodeswheninitiallyactivated.WhentheYD
Key is pressed, the system engages the yaw damper independently of the autopilot (if not already engaged).
Autopilot and yaw damper status are displayed in the center of the AFCSStatusBox.Engagementisindicated
bygreen‘AP’and‘YD’annunciations,respectively.

Duringautopilotoperation,theaircraftmaybehand-ownwithoutdisengagingtheautopilot.Pressingand
holding the
CWS
Buttondisengagesthepitchandrollservosfromtheightcontrolsurfacesandallowsthe
aircrafttobehand-own.Atthesametime,theightdirectorissynchronizedtotheaircraftattitudeduring
themaneuver.CWSactivityhasnoeffectonyawdamperengagement.The‘AP’annunciationistemporarily
replacedby‘CWS’inwhiteforthedurationofCWSmaneuvers.
Inmostscenarios,releasingthe
CWS
Buttonreengagestheautopilotwithanewreference.Refertotheight
directormodessectionforCWSbehaviorineachmode.
