EMC VNX VG2/VG8 Gateway Configuration Setup Guide

Before Installing
EMC CONFIDENTIAL
◆ Verify the switch or switches have available ports to connect to the array. The
FC/FCoE connections between a Symmetrix array and a switch used for the VNX
gateway cannot be used for any other host computer. VNX arrays can share the
connection between the switch and the array with other hosts. This is not
applicable for direct-connected VNX gateway.
◆ Verify that the facility has adequate network connections for required subnets.
Each blade requires separate network connections:
• “Step 6: External network cables” on page 76 provides information for the
cable and connector requirements for a fabric-connected VG2 system.
• “Step 5: External network cables” on page 87 provides information for the
cable and connector requirements for a direct-connected VG2 system.
• “Step 6: External network cables” on page 110 provides information for the
cable and connector requirements for a fabric-connected VG8 system.
• “Step 5: External network cables” on page 123 provides information for the
cable and connector requirements for a direct-connected VG2 system.
◆ Verify that the supplied cables have the correct connectors for the customer’s
FC/FCoE switches (optical cables for FC switches; optical or active twinaxial
cables for FCoE switches). This is not applicable for direct-connected VNX
gateways.
Systems with
Symmetrix arrays
If you are connecting the VNX VG2/VG8 gateway to a Symmetrix array (DMX,
VMAX, or VMAXe):
◆ Check the EMC E-Lab Interoperability Navigator on Powerlink to verify that the
array is supported and the required array software versions are installed.
◆ Verify that each of two different channel directors has at least one Fibre Channel
port (two ports total) for the exclusive use of the VNX VG2/VG8 gateway.
Verify that EMC has configured the Symmetrix array with the required
hypervolumes for the VNX gateway volumes and user volumes. For more
information, see:
http://www.cs.isus.emc.com/config/Products/
EMCProducts/Celerra/Celerra.htm
◆ You must manually zone the FC switch if you are using a Symmetrix array for the
boot array. Appendix F, “Manually Zone Switches and Configure System LUNs,”
provides information about manually zoning the FC switch.
Fabric-connected
systems with VNX
arrays
If you are connecting the VNX gateway to a fabric-connected VNX array:
◆ Check the EMC E-Lab Interoperability Navigator on Powerlink to verify that the
array is a supported model. Verify that the required array software versions are
installed.
◆ Verify that all SAN ports on the array are connected to the Fibre Channel switch
or switches. If some SAN ports are not in use, verify that there are available
switch ports to connect them.
◆ Verify that there are at least four unused disks available in the array (these are the
vault disks). The array must also have an available hot spare disk or another
unused disk that can be configured as a hot spare.
◆ Verify that both SPs are up and functioning, that write cache is enabled, and that
existing LUNs are not trespassed or faulted.
