Fax error codes and messages
Definitions and helpful directions for messages that can display when faxing.
Numeric codes when receiving faxes (200 - 292)
Error codes that can display when receiving a fax.
200: The fax completed successfully. No action is required.
221: Stop key was pressed by the sender before the fax completed. Ask to have the fax resent.
222: Multiple causes:
• Fax machine answered an incoming voice call. Make sure the incoming call is a fax machine and not a
voice call.
• Stop key was pressed by the sender prior to or as the call is answered. If the sending fax machine ends
the call just as your machine starts reception, reduce the ring count on your answering setting. Or, ask to
have the fax resent.
• Fax machine is an older silent model. Enable the Silent Detect setting, and then make sure the sender is
not inadvertently attempting to poll your fax for a document instead of sending it.
• Sending fax machine automatically ended the call prior to or as the call is answered. Select a slower
reception speed in the fax settings.
• Sending fax machine identified an incompatible feature between the two machines and disconnected.
This scenario rarely occurs. Reconfigure your fax machine to use different configuration settings and
enable or disable Error Correction Mode (ECM) as necessary.
223 ECM, 224: Incomplete page received after multiple attempts. Check for poor line conditions. Disable Error
Correction Mode (ECM) and select a slower reception speed if necessary.
225: Sending fax machine initiated a remote diagnostic session when your machine has remote diagnostic
access disabled. Enable Remote Diagnostics on your machine, or request that the sender disable the feature for
your fax number.
226: Sending fax machine initiated a remote diagnostic session, but your machine is not compatible with their
diagnostic version. Request that the sender disable the feature for your fax number.
227: Fax sent at a speed and modulation that your machine does not support. Configure the speed and
modulation settings with the sending and receiving fax machine, as necessary.
228: Sending fax machine initiated a poll transmission (Fax-on-Demand), but your machine does not support or
is not configured for poll transmission. If your machine supports Fax-on-Demand, make sure the document to
send is loaded and polling or Fax-on-Demand is enabled in fax settings.
229: Sending fax machine initiated a secure poll transmission, but your machine did not provide a valid
password. Make sure your machine supports polling/Fax-on-Demand, and the password is correct and
configured correctly.
230: Sending fax machine initiated an operation requiring error correction, but error correction was not
selected. Enable Error Correction Mode (ECM) on both the local machine and the remote machine.
231: Fax not received due to incorrectly loaded paper, a paper jam, or a printer error.
