CIO® FOUR MODULES
Scio Four
The Scio Four continuously measures the content of
CO
2
, N
2
O, and one of the anesthetic agents
Halothane, Isoflurane, Enflurane, Sevoflurane and
Desflurane in any mixture. The user must manually
select the primary anesthetic agent (see page
23-21).
Scio Four does not measure O
2
but displays a
parameter box with no O
2
label and data.
Scio Four communicates real time and derived gas information to the host system. The
monitor saves values derived by the modules in its trend storage.

The Scio module uses infrared light for the measurement of CO
2
and volatile
anaesthetics. A small amount of the patient respiratory gas is drawn through a
measuring chamber. An infrared light is shone through the chamber and the gas
sample absorbs different amounts of light. A paramagnetic cell is used for the
measurement of O
2
. This cell uses a physical reaction that is proportional to the O
2
concentration. Mechanical shocks during measurement or the presence of other
paramagnetic agents can distort the measurement of oxygen concentration.
Due to the response time of the sensors and the gas sample flow rate, the stated
accuracy of O
2
, CO
2
, N
2
O and anesthetic agents is limited by respiratory rate and
inspiratory to expiratory (I:E) ratio.
 (Scio Four Oxi plus and Scio Four Oxi only) – For O
2
measurements, the
stated accuracy of Scio is maintained to a respiratory rate of 60 BPM with an
I:E ratio of 1:2.
 For CO
2
measurements, accuracy is maintained to a respiratory rate of 75
BPM with an I:E ratio of 1:2.
NOTE: Scio Four displays the message AA? in MultiGas parameter box and Agent?
in the agent parameter box until user selects agent in the parameter menu.
