11DopplerRadaroverview
DopplerRadartechnologymakesiteasiertotrackmovingtargetswithsignificantgroundspeed
exceeding3knots.
TypicallyDopplerRadarworksbestwithobjectsthataremovingdirectlytowardsorawayfromthe
vessel.DopplerRadarcanhighlightonlythosetargetsthataremovingrelativetothevessel(e.g.
otherboats,butnotlandorbuoys,forexample).
DopplerRadarworksbytransmittingamicrowavesignalwhichisthenreflectedoffadesiredmoving
targetatadistance.Byanalyzinghowtheobject'smotionhasalteredthefrequencyofthereturned
signal,theDopplerRadarcaninterpretthevariationtoprovidehighlyaccuratemeasurementsofa
target'sdirectionoftravel,relativetotheRadarscanner.
DopplerRadartechnologyisparticularlybeneficialinamarineenvironment,wherepoorweather
conditionsandvisibilitycanmaketargettrackingdifficult.Additionally,itisnotalwayseasyto
interprettheinformationdisplayedbytraditionalRadartechnology.WiththeintegrationofDoppler
information,theprocessofmatchingon-screenradarreturnswithreal-worldobjectsbecomes
amuchsimplertask.
