20 .4UAVprecautions
OperatingyourUAVoverwaterandlaunchingandretrievingyourUAVonavesselcanbea
significantlydifferentexperiencethanwhenonland.
Thefollowingprecautionsshouldbefollowed:
•Y ouwillneedtobeanexperienced,competentpilotaslaunchingandretrievingtheUAVona
vesselismoredifficultduetoconfinedspaceandvesselmovement/drift.
•OnlylaunchyourUAVincalmwindandtideconditions.Whenattemptingtolaunchorretrieve
yourUAVyourvesselshouldbetravellingatlessthan1knotandyourcaptainshouldbereadyat
thehelmtobackdownormaneuverthevesseltoavoidaccidentalcollisions
•MaintainawarenessofyourUAV’sbatterystatus,remainingflighttime,distancefromyourvessel
andWindandTideconditions.AUAVflyingagainstthewindwillconsumebatterypowermore
rapidlythanwhenflyingdownwindorincalmconditions.Alwaysbudgetsufficientpowerreserves
toensurethesafereturnandretrievalofyourUAV.
•MaintainapermanentwatchofyourUAVwhileinflight.TheUAVpilotorcompetentobserver
mustmaintainawarenessofsurroundingairandmarinetrafficwhiletheUAVisinflight.Thepilot
mustremainreadytotakecontroloftheUAVandmanuallyflyittoavoidinterferingwithother
vesselsoraircraft.
•WhileyourUAV’scontrollerisconnectedtoyourMFDitshouldbepositionedsothatitmaintains
lineofsightwithyourairborneUAV.Ifthecontrollerisnothandheldthenitmustbesecuredto
preventitbecomingdisconnectedfromyourMFDandtopreventunintentionalbuttonpresses.
