BatteryCareELECTRICVEHICLE-BATTERIES
Singlepointwateringsystemswillrequireseasonalmaintenanceifvehiclesaretakenoutofserviceorputintostorage
foraperiodof6weeksorlonger.TopreparetheSPWS,ensurethefeedtubeandcouplerareontopofbattery.Then,
usethefollowingstepstobringvehiclebackintoservice:
1.Afterthebatterieshavebeenfullycharged/equalized,connectthesystemtoitswatersupplyfor3to5seconds,
thendisconnectregardlessofwhetherornotthebatteriesarecompletelyfull.
2.Returnthevehicletonormaloperation.
3.Placethevehiclebackintoitsregularwateringschedule,waitingatleastoneweekuntilnextwatering.
BATTERYCARE–VEHICLESEQUIPPEDWITHTHESINGLE-POINTWATERINGSYSTEM
Tokeepbatteriesingoodworkingcondition,followthismaintenanceprogramonaregularbasis:
1.Keepthebatteriescleanandfreeofcorrosion.Washtopsandterminalsofbatterieswithasolutionofbaking
sodaandwater;use1cup(237mL)bakingsodaper1gallon(3.8L)ofwater.Rinsesolutionoffofthebatteries.
Donotallowthissolutiontoenterthebattery.Besureterminalsaretight.Lettheterminalsdryandthencoatwith
BatteryT erminalProtectorSpray.SeefollowingNOTE.
NOTE:Disposeofwastewaterproperly.
2.Thebatteryhold-downsshouldbetightenoughsothatthebatteriesdonotmovewhilethevehicleisinmotion,
butnotsotightastocrackorbucklethebatterycase.For8-voltbatteries,tightenhold-downretainingnutsto
106in·lb(12N·m).Theterminalconnectionsshouldbecleanandtight,andanyworninsulationorfrayed
wiresshouldbereplaced.Tightenbatteryterminalstopropertorque.SeeConnecttheBatteries–Electric
Vehiclesonpage1-5.SeefollowingWARNING.
WARNING
•Ifbatterywireterminalsaredamagedorcorroded,replaceorcleanthemasnecessary.Failureto
dosomaycausethemtooverheatduringoperationandcouldresultinre,propertydamage,or
personalinjury.
3.Afteruse,chargethebatteries.Thebatteriesshouldneverbeleftdischargedanylongerthanabsolutely
necessary(donotleavedischargedovernight).
4.Waterthebatteriesmonthlyoraccordingtothewateringinterval.SeeEstablishingtheWateringIntervalfor
NewVehiclesonpage14-8.SeeWateringBatterieswiththeSPWSonpage14-11.
CAUTION
•Thewateringintervalmustadequatelymaintaintheelectrolytelevelabovethetopoftheplates.

•WaterthebatteriesonlyAFTERcharging.
NOTE:Bottleddistilledwater,withthehandpumpisrecommendedforprivateconsumerSPWSapplications.
EstablishingtheWateringIntervalforNewVehicles
Ifyoudonotalreadyhaveabatterywateringintervalforyourvehicles,manuallycheckthebatterywaterlevelweekly
toestablishthecorrectwateringinterval.Thereafter,waterbatteriesaccordingtotheestablishedinterval.During
periodsofheavyuse,addadditionalwateringasrequired.
Single-PointWateringSystem(SPWS)Maintenance
1.ForvehiclesnewlyequippedwiththeSingle-PointWateringSystem,theinitialelectrolytelevelcheckonall
batterycellsveriesthatallthevalvesintheSPWSarefunctioningcorrectly.SeePeriodicServiceSchedules
onpage10-4.Ifavalvefailstoopen,thecellwilleventuallydryout.Theinitialone-timeinspectionofallcells
willidentifyanyoccurrenceofavalvethatfailstoopen.Ifavalvefailstoclose,itwillbecomeevidentdueto
