2.Removetheandcapandarmaturebyperformingsteps1through7ofMotorDisassemblyonpage16-5.
3.Burnedorscorchedinsulationontheeldwindingsindicatesthemotorhasoverheatedduetooverloadsor
groundedorshortedcoilwindings.Iftheinsulationontheeldwindingsisscorched,replacethemotoror
thestatorshellassembly.
MOTORBRUSH,SPRING,ANDTERMINALINSULATORINSPECTION
BrushSpringTensionTest
1.Removethemotorfromthevehicle.SeeMotorRemovalonpage16-4.
2.Removetheendcapandarmaturebyperformingsteps1through7ofMotorDisassemblyonpage16-5.
3.Inspectthebrushsprings(14)(Figure16-15,Page16-12).Replacespringsthatarediscoloredfromheat
(lightgoldorbluetinted).
4.Testthebrushspringsforpropertension.
4.1.PlaceaC-shapedsteelplateonascale.
4.2.PlacetheendoftheC-shapedplatesothatitisbetweenthespringandthebrushasshown(Figure
16-13,Page16-11).
4.3.Gentlypullthescaletoobtainthespringtensionreading.SeefollowingCAUTION.
CAUTION
•Whencheckingbrushspringtension,donotover-extendthespring.Usingexcessiveforcewill
damagethespring.
4.4.Replacespringswhichrequireaforceoflessthan35ozf(0.99kgf)(Figure16-13,Page16-11).See
followingNOTE.
NOTE:Wheninstallingnewbrushes,removeandreplacebrushesoneatatime.Thismethodensurestheterminals
andbrusheswillbeproperlypositionedintherigging.RefertoMotorAssemblyonpage16-13forbrush
installation.
Whenreplacingbrushes,replaceallfourbrushes.Neverreplaceonlytwo.
Installthebrushesinthesamerigging180°apartfromeachother.
BrushInspection
1.Removethemotorfromthevehicle.SeeMotorRemovalonpage16-4.
2.Removetheendcapandarmaturebyperformingsteps1through7ofMotorDisassemblyonpage16-5.
3.Inspectthebrushes(13)fordamageorexcessivewear(Figure16-15,Page16-12).Replacebrushesifrequired.

4.Usedialcalipersoramicrometertomeasurethebrushlength.Theminimum-allowablebrushlengthis0.62
inches(16mm).Replacethesetofbrushesasrequired.SeeprecedingNOTE.
TerminalInsulatorInspection
1.Removethemotorfromthevehicle.SeeMotorRemovalonpage16-4.
2.Removetheterminalinsulatorsbyperformingsteps1through12ofMotorDisassemblyonpage16-5.
3.Inspecttheinsulators(4and6)forcracksorotherdamage(Figure16-15,Page16-12).Replaceinsulators
asrequired.
