1.Tokeepthebatteryingoodoperatingcondition,removeanycorrosionimmediately.Postconnectionsshouldbe
cleanandtight.Anyfrayedorwornwiresshouldbereplaced.Afterallcableshavebeenconnectedandproperly
tightenedto41lb·in(4.3N·m),coatterminalswithBatteryT erminalProtectorSpraytopreventfuturecorrosion.

CAUTION
•Ifbatterywireterminalsaredamagedorcorroded,replaceorcleanthemasnecessary.Failuretodo
somaycausethemtooverheatduringoperationandcouldresultinare,propertydamage,or
personalinjury.
2.Thebatteryshouldbekeptcleananddrytopreventself-discharge.Anydirt,grimeoracidspillageshouldbe
removed.Washthebatterywithabristlebrushusingwaterandbicarbonateofsoda(1cup(237mL)baking
sodaper1gallon(3.8L)ofwater).Rinsewithwater.Donotallowsolutiontoenterbatterythroughtheventcap

3.Checkbatteryperiodicallytoseethatitisinafullstateofcharge.SeeChargingtheBatteryonpage19-3.
4.Keepbatteryhold-downclamptight.SeeVibrationDamageonpage19-2.
SELF-DISCHARGE
Dirtandbatteryacidcanprovideapathforasmallcurrentdrawthatslowlydischargesthebattery.Toprevent
self-discharge,thebatteryshouldalwaysbekeptclean.
Hotweatheralsohasaneffectonabattery’sself-dischargerate.Thehigherthetemperature,thequickerabatterywill
discharge.Inhotterclimates,therefore,thebatteryshouldbecheckedmoreoften.Whenstoringthebattery,keep
inacoolplace.SeeBatteryStorageonpage19-4.
VIBRATIONDAMAGE
Thebatteryhold-downclampshouldalwaysbetightenoughtokeepthebatteryfrombouncing.Batterylifemaybe
severelyshortenediftheclampistooloose.Excessivevibrationshortensthelifeofthebattery.Itmayalsocauseacid
toleakoutoftheventcapsandcorrosiontobuilduponsurroundingmetalparts.Theacidthatislostreducesthe
capacityofthebatteryandcannotbereplaced.
