1.Ifpreviouslyremoved,installanewoilseal.
1.1.Cleansealseatintheadapterring(39)(Figure17-3,Page17-2).
1.2.Placeanewseal(15)intheadapterringwiththeseallipfacingtowardtheadapterringlip(Figure17-3,
Page17-2).Useanaxlesealtoolandmallettotapitinuntilitseatsrmlyinposition(Figure17-3,Page
17-2).Ahydraulicpressmayalsobeusedwiththeaxlesealtool.
1.3.Cleanadapterringseat(s)intheaxletube(14or35)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
1.4.ApplyLoctite
®
603totheouterdiameteroftheadapterring.
1.5.Placetheoilsealandadapterringassemblyintotheaxletubewiththeseallipfacingawayfromthebearing
(Figure17-4,Page17-2).Useanaxlesealtoolandmallettotapitinuntilitseatsrmlyinposition.See
followingCAUTION.
CAUTION
•Cleananyresidualoilfromtheexposedendoftheaxleshaftandfromtheoilsealareapriorto
installingtheaxleshafttopreventoilfromcomingincontactwithbrakes.
2.Installtherearaxleintothetransaxle.SeefollowingNOTE.
2.1.Inserttheshaft,splinedendrst,throughthesealandintotheaxletube.Becarefulnottodamagetheseal
ontheinsideoftheaxletubehub.Advancetheshaftthroughtothebearingontheshaft,thenrotateitto
aligntheshaftsplineswiththesplinedboreofthedifferentialsidegear(27)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
Continueadvancingtheshaftuntilthebearingontheaxleisrmlyseatedwithintheaxletubehubseat.
2.2.Useapairofsnapringplierstoinstalltheretainingring(6)insideaxletubehubsothatitseatsagainst
theaxlebearingassemblyandintothemachinedslotintheinsidewalloftheaxletubehub(Figure
17-5,Page17-3).
NOTE:Iftheretainingring(6),axlebearing(5),orsleeve(4)mustbereplaced,theentireaxleshaftassembly(1
or2)mustbereplaced(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
2.3.Placea1/4to3/8-inch(6to10mm)diameterrodagainsttheretainingringandtaplightlyatfourtove
locationsaroundtheretainingringtoensureitisproperlyseated.SeefollowingWARNING.
WARNING
•Besuretheretainingringisproperlyseatedinitsgroove.Iftheringisnotproperlyinstalled,theaxle
assemblywillseparatefromthetransaxleanddamagetheaxleassemblyandothercomponents.Loss
ofvehiclecontrolcouldresult,causingseverepersonalinjuryordeath.
3.Ifanewoilsealwasinstalled,allow24hoursbeforeoperatingthevehicletoallowtheLoctite
®
603tofullycure.
AXLEBEARING
Donotremovetheaxlebearing(5)fromaTypeGtransaxle.Ifbearingiswornordamaged,theentireaxleassembly
(1or2)mustbereplaced(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
