TRANSAXLEASSEMBLY
CAUTION
•Donotpressagainstthebearingouterrace.
•Thehousingandallpartsmustbewipedcleananddrybeforereassembly.
1.Ifbearings(13)wereremovedduringdisassembly,installnewbearingsusinganarborpress(Figure17-5,
Page17-3).
2.Assemblethedifferentialgearcase.
2.1.Installthepin(31)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).Applyasmallamountofoiltoallthrustplatesandtoboth
endsofthepin.
2.2.Installthehexbolts(33)andoutputgear(32).Tightenboltsto58ft·lb(78.6N·m).
3.Pressanewbearing(18)ontotheintermediategearassembly(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
4.Pressnewbearing(16)ontoinputpiniongear(17).
5.Applygreasetothelipofthenewoilseal(10)andinstallthesealusingatransaxlepinionsealtool.Thelipofthe
oilsealshouldfacetheinsideofthetransaxlehousing.Makesurethesealisrmlyseated.
6.Installthedifferentialassembly(4),theintermediategearassembly(3),andtheinputpiniongear(2)
simultaneously.Besureallbearingsareseatedproperlyinthehousing.Rotatetheinputshafttocheckfor
smoothgearoperation(Figure17-11,Page17-6).
7.Installdowelpin(s)(25)(iforiginallyinstalled)inthetransaxlehousing(20)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
8.Installlefthalfoftransaxlehousing:
8.1.Placea1/8-inch(3mm)beadofThreeBondliquidgasketonmatingsurfaceofhousing.
8.2.Installlefthalfoftransaxlehousing(20)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
8.3.Installbolts(24)inthecasehousingandtightento19ft·lb(25.7N·m).TypeGtransaxleshavenoshims
orgasket.
8.4.Installaxletube(14and35)withbolts(8)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).Tightentheboltsto37ft·lb(50.2N·m).
9.Installthebrakeassembliesasinstructed.SeeBrakeClusterInstallationonpage6-15.
10.Applyasmallamountofgreasetothelipoftheoilseal(15)(Figure17-5,Page17-3).SeefollowingCAUTION.
CAUTION
•Cleananyresidualoilfromtheexposedendoftheaxleshaftandfromtheoilsealareapriorto
installingtheaxleshafttopreventoilfromcomingincontactwithbrakes.
11.Installtherearaxleontothetransaxle.
11.1.Insertthesplinedendoftheaxleshaftintotheaxletube.Becarefulnottodamagethesealontheinsideof
theaxletubehub.Advancetheshaftthroughtothebearingontheshaft,androtateittoaligntheshaft
splineswiththesplinedboreofthedifferentialgear.Continueadvancingtheshaftuntilthebearingonthe
axleisrmlyseatedwithintheaxletubehubseat.
11.2.Using90°internalsnapringpliers(0.090tip),attachtheinternalretainingringintotheaxletubehubsothat
itseatsagainsttheaxlebearingassemblyandintothemachinedslotintheinsidewalloftheaxletube
hub(Figure17-5,Page17-3).
11.3.Placea1/4to3/8-inch(6to10mm)diameterrodagainsttheretainingringandtaplightlyatfourorve
locationstoensureitisproperlyseated.SeefollowingWARNING.
