WARNING
•Besureretainingringisproperlyseatedinitsgroove.Ifringisnotproperlyinstalled,theaxle
assemblywillseparatefromthetransaxleanddamagetheaxleassemblyandothercomponents.Loss
ofvehiclecontrolcouldresultinseverepersonalinjuryordeath.
12.Makesurethedrainplug(22)isinstalledinthetransaxleandtightenedto23ft·lb(31N·m).Fillthetransaxle,
throughthelevelindicatorhole,with22-ozofSAE30APIClassSE,SF,orSGoil(ahighergrademayalsobe
used).Installandtightenthelevelindicatorplug(21)to23ft·lb(31N·m).
TRANSAXLEINSTALLATION
SeeGeneralWarningsonpage1-2.
1.Ifusingachainhoist,raisethevehicleandplacetransaxleinpositiononthejackstands.Ifusingaoorjack,
lowerthejackstandstotheirlowestsettingsandplacethetransaxleinpositiononthejackstands.
2.Alignthecenterholeinthesaddleofthetransaxlewiththepilotboltintheleafspringassembly.
3.InstallthetwoU-bolts,jouncebumpermount(ifrequired),andspacers,lockwashers,andnuts.Tightenthenuts
to25ft·lb(34N·m).TightentheU-boltnutssoanequalamountofthreadisvisibleoneachlegofthebolt.
4.Installthemotor.SeeMotorInstallationonpage16-15.
5.Ifusingachainhoist,lowerthevehiclewhileguidingtheleafspringsintotherearspringshackles.Ifusinga
oorjack,raisethedifferentialwhileguidingtheleafspringsintotherearspringshackles.Thenraisethejack
standstosupportthetransaxle.
6.Connectthemotorwires,makingsuretheyareconnectedtothecorrectmotorterminalsandthattheterminal
orientationiscorrect.Holdthebottomnutofstudwithwrenchandtightentheterminalretainingnuts.For5/16
inch(8mm)diameterstuds,tightenthenutsto100in·lb(11N·m).For1/4inch(6.3mm)diameterstuds,tighten
thenutsto45in·lb(5.0N·m).SeefollowingNOTE.
NOTE:Ifthemotorwireswerenottaggedwhendisconnected,refertothewiringdiagramforproperconnection.See.
7.Insertboltsthroughthespringshacklesandbushingsintheleafspringeyes.Secureboltswithlocknuts.
Tightento18.5ft·lb(25N·m).
8.Connectthebrakecablesusingnewbowtiepins(1)(Figure17-7,Page17-5).
9.Installtheshockabsorbers.Tightenshockabsorberretainingnutsuntiltherubberbushingsexpandtothe
samesizeasthecupwashers.
10.Installtherearwheelsandnger-tightenthelugnuts.
11.Liftthevehicleandremovethejackstands.
12.Lowervehicleandtightenthelugnuts,usingacrisscrosspattern,to55ft·lb(74.6N·m).
13.PlacetheTow/RunswitchintheTOWpositionandconnectthebatteries.SeeConnecttheBatteries–Electric
Vehiclesonpage1-5.
14.Inspectthevehicletocheckforproperoperation.SeefollowingWARNING.

•MakesurethatthevehicleoperatesintheforwarddirectionwhentheForward/Reverseswitchis
