Addwateronlyafterchargingunlesstheelectrolyteisbelowtheleveloftheplates.Iftheelectrolytelevelisbelowthe
leveloftheplates,addjustenoughwatertocovertheplatesandthenchargethebatteries.Aftercharging,llwith
watertothelevelindicator.Fillingabatterytothelevelindicatorbeforechargingwillresultinoverllingbecausethe
electrolytelevelwillriseduringchargingandsomeoftheelectrolytemaybubbleoutofthecap.Thisreducesthe
battery’scapacityandcorrodesthemetalpartsaroundit.
Theelectrolytelevelshouldbecheckedweeklytobesureelectrolyteisatitsproperlevel(Figure14-3,Page14-10).
Neverallowtheelectrolyteleveltofallbelowthetopsoftheplatesbecausethiswillcausetheexposedpartoftheplate
tobecomepermanentlyinactive.Forbestresults,useabatterywateringguntoaddwatertobatteries.Checkthe
electrolytelevelmorefrequentlyinhotweatherorwhenbatteriesareold.
VIBRATIONDAMAGE
Thebatteryhold-downsshouldalwaysbetightenoughtokeepthebatteryfrombouncing.Batterylifemaybeseverely
shortenedifthebatteryhold-downsaretooloose.Seestep6.ofBatteryReplacementonpage14-5.Excessive
vibrationcausestheplatestoshedprematurelyandshortensthelifeofthebattery.Itmayalsocauseacidtoleakoutof
theventcapsandcorrosiontobuilduponsurroundingmetalparts.Theacidwhichislostreducesthecapacityofthe
batteryandcannotbereplaced.Batteryhold-downsshouldNOTbesotightastocrackorbucklethebatterycase.This
maycauseleakswhichwoulddryoutacellorcauseinternalshortcircuits.SeeBatteryReplacementonpage14-5.
