40.5 Configuring Multiple WAN Backup
You can configure a multiple WAN backup scheme for your device, where multiple WAN
interfaces can serve as backups for the primary (or a backup) WAN interface. You can
assign up to three WAN interfaces (e.g., optic fiber, VDSL, and 3G modem) to a backup
WAN group. For each WAN interface in the group, you can assign priorities where priority
level 1 is the primary WAN interface. If this primary WAN fails, the device uses the WAN
interface assigned with the next priority level (i.e., 2). If this backup WAN interface fails, the
device uses the WAN interface with the next priority level, and so on. When a higher-
priority WAN interface regains connectivity, the device switches back to the higher-priority
interface.
For example, if the primary WAN interface is copper Gigabit Ethernet and it fails, the device
switches over to the SHDSL WAN interface which is set with priority 2. If this WAN
interface also fails, the device switches over to the 3G WAN interface which is set with
priority 3.
Notes:
• Only one of the WAN interfaces of the backup group can be active at any
given time.
• You can also configure LAN-side VLANs as WAN interfaces.
This feature is configured using the CLI, as described below:
 To configure WAN backup:
1. Add a WAN backup group name:
a. Define the backup group name:
backup-group <group-name> [ primary-wan ]
b. Define a description for the group:
description <desc-text>
For example:
(configure)# backup-group abc primary-wan
(backup-group)# description WAN-group
(backup-group)# exit
2. Associate a WAN interface and its priority level to the backup group:
# backup monitoring group <group-name defined in Step 1>
priority <1|2|3>
For example, below is a configuration of two SHDSL WAN links and a 3G cellular link:
(config-data)# interface atm 0/0
(conf-atm0/0)# backup monitoring group abc priority 1
(conf-atm0/0)# exit
(config-data)# interface atm 1/0
(conf-atm1/0)# backup monitoring group abc priority 2
(conf-atm1/0)# exit
(config-data)# interface cellular 0/0
(conf-cellular)# backup monitoring group abc priority 3
(conf-cellular)# exit
(config-data)# exit
