18.3 C.O. Measurement Limitations
The following factors may influence the accuracy of C.O. measurement:
â– temperature of injectate solution
â– volume of injectate solution
■baseline of patient’s blood temperature
■patient’s inspiratory/expiratory cycle
â– placement of catheter with relation to proximity of lung field
â– the catheter itself
■patient’s heart rate and hemodynamic status
â– any solution infused with intravenous injection during the C.O. measurement
To obtain accurate C.O. measurements, follow these recommendations:
■Temperature of injectate solution must be at least 10 ºC cooler than that of the patient’s blood.
â– Inject solution at end of expiration.
â– Inject solution rapidly and smoothly.
â– Finish injection within four to five seconds.
18.4 C.O. Display
The C.O. display shows only C.O., C.I (cardiac index), and TB (blood temperature) in the C.O. numeric area.
