User's Manual 39. Physical Network Separation Mode
39 Physical Network Separation Mode
When the device operates in the multiple IP interfaces scheme, it uses a single physical
Ethernet port (Gigabit Ethernet port on the RTM) to connect to the different networks. All
traffic types (OAMP, Media and Control) are directed through this port. Employing VLAN
tags and an external VLAN-aware switch, the traffic can be directed to separate physical
networks.
In contrast, Physical Network Separation, which is supported only when the device houses
a TP-8410 blade, allocates dedicated physical Ethernet ports to the different network
interface application types (OAMP, Call Control and RTP Media). In such a setup, the
device splits the traffic between these different application types into different physical
ports. Physical Network Separation feature eliminates the need for a VLAN-aware switch
using VLAN tags to separate the different traffic of each network. In this mode, the device
actually implements the same scheme internally. This means that VLAN tags are used
internally, but traffic is not sent or received with VLAN tags.
Physical Network Separation provides you with the following optional port allocation
schemes:
Dedicated Port per Application Type:
Media: Gigabit Ethernet port on RTM-8410.
Control: 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports labeled 1A (bottom Power Entry
Modules/PEM module) and 1B (top PEM module)
OAMP: 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports labeled 2A (bottom PEM module) and 2B
(top PEM module)
The following figure illustrates the port allocation:
