Printing on Envelopes
You can print on envelopes, but performance is not guaranteed. To maximize the chance of successful printing,
Xerox recommends that you follow the guidelines below.
SELECTING AN ENVELOPE
The paper type of the media that you select for a specific print job determines the quality of the printed output. To
achieve optimum print quality, consider the following factors:
• The general composition of the media, such as texture, weight, and thickness
• The application of the media in the physical design and construction of the envelope
This section highlights common envelope styles and the challenges that certain envelope types can impose.
In some cases, the composition and construction of the envelope can limit one or both of the following:
• Based on the envelope construction, the positioning of any printed content on the envelope
• Based on the envelope composition, the types of graphic artwork or photographic images that you can use
Do not use the following envelope types:
• Pressure-seal envelopes
• Envelopes with metal closures
• Envelopes with tie closures
• Other non-standard envelopes
Envelope Styles and Considerations
The examples below apply to standard #10 commercial business envelopes, but the details apply to other sizes also.
Side Seams
Generally, envelopes with side seams are preferred for laser-type printing. The side seam design provides a large
surface area that is uninterrupted by folds and seams.
