Tippingabatterybeyonda45°angleinanydirectioncanallowasmallamountofelectrolytetoleak
outtheventhole.Donotexceedthis45°anglewhenlifting,carrying,orinstallingbatteries.Battery
acidcancauseseverepersonalinjurytoskinoreyes,andcandamageclothing.
•WhenreplacingbatteriesintheSinglePointWateringSystem,placethebatterycapfromthenew
replacementbatteryontotheusedbatterybeingremovedfromthecar.Importantsafetywarningson
thebatterycapmustremainwiththebatteryafterithasbeenremovedfromthecar
CAUTION
•Topreventdegradationofbatteryperformanceandlife,nevermixbatteriesofdifferentpartnumbers
orbrands/modelnumbers.Anytimeadifferentmodelofbatteryisused,thechargingalgorithmmust
bechangedtomatchit.ForvehicleswithPowerDrivecharger,thevehicles'onboardcomputermust
bechangedtoonethatisspecictothebatteryinstalled.Forvehicleswithhigh-frequencycharger
(e.g.ERICorQuiQ),thechargermustbereprogrammedwiththeappropriatealgorithmspecicto
thebatteryinstalled.
1.Beforeremovingbatteries,notetheorientationofthebatteriesandtheconnectingwires.Disconnectthebattery
cablesanddischargethecontrollerasinstructed.SeeDisconnectingtheBatteries–ElectricVehicleson
page1-4.Removeremainingwiresandbatteries.
2.Visuallyinspectthenewbatteriesforanydamagethatmayhaveoccurredintransit.Newbatterieswillnotdeliver
theirfullcapabilitiesuntiltheyhavebeendischargedandrecharged50to70times.Toobtainthemaximum
servicelifefromnewbatteries,restrictvehicleswithnewbatteriestoonehourofoperationbetweenchargesfor
thersttwomonthsvehicleisinservice.Batteriesshouldbefullychargedbeforerstuseofnewvehicle,before
rstuseofavehicleafterstorage,andbeforeuseeachday.
3.Ifthebatterycablesaretobereused,inspectthemforbrokenorfrayedwires,damagedterminals,orworn
insulation.Removeanycorrosionontheconnectors.Asolutionofbakingsodaandwater(1cup(237mL)baking
sodaper1gallon(3.8L)ofwater)doesanexcellentjobofneutralizingandremovingthecorrosion.Becareful
nottoallowthebakingsodasolutiontoenterthebattery.
4.Checkandcleanthebatteryrackandhold-downs.Thenutsandboltsonthehold-downsmaycorrode.Itis
thereforeadvisedtheybecleanedperiodicallyandreplacedasnecessary.
5.Regroupbatteriesasrequired.SeeBatteryRegroupingonpage14-3.
6.Installregroupedornewbatteriesintheproperorientation(Figure1-1,Page1-4).Installbatteryhold-downs.
Thehold-downsshouldbetightenoughsobatteriesdonotmovewhilevehicleisinmotion,butnotsotightas
tocrackorbucklebatterycase.Tightenhold-downretainingnutsto72lb·in(8.1N·m),alternatingbetween
hold-downbolts.
7.Installwiresinpropersequence.Installblackwiretonegativepostofbatteryno.6(6x8-Voltbatteryset)last.

8.Ifreplacementbatterieshaveadifferentpartnumberthanthebatteriesremoved,eitherreplacethevehicles'
onboardcomputerorreprogramthehigh-frequencycharger.SeeprecedingCAUTION.
9.Givethebatteriesafullchargepriortooperation.Thisensuresallthebatteriesarefullychargedandthecellsare
equalizedpriortouse.
