EstablishingtheWateringIntervalforNewVehicles
Ifyoudonotalreadyhaveabatterywateringintervalforyourvehicles,manuallycheckthebatterywaterlevelweekly
toestablishthecorrectwateringinterval.Thereafter,waterbatteriesaccordingtotheestablishedinterval.During
periodsofheavyuse,addadditionalwateringasrequired.
Single-PointWateringSystem(SPWS)Maintenance
1.ForvehiclesequippedwiththeSingle-PointWateringSystem(SPWS),theinitialelectrolytelevelcheckonall
batterycellsveriesthatallthevalvesintheSPWSarefunctioningcorrectly.SeePeriodicServiceSchedules
onpage10-4.Ifavalvefailstoopen,thecellwilleventuallydryout.Theinitialone-timeinspectionofallcells
willidentifyanyoccurrenceofavalvethatfailstoopen.Ifavalvefailstoclose,itwillbecomeevidentdueto
thecelloverowingduringroutinewatering.Eitherfailurescenarioisrare,butshouldbemonitoredintheinitial
inspectionandduringroutinewateringsessions.Replacemalfunctioningvalvestoensuremaximumbattery
life.SeefollowingCAUTION.

•Aftercheckingtheelectrolyte,fullytightenthebatterycapstopreventelectrolyteleakage.
2.Aftertheinitialsix-weekinspection,manuallychecktheelectrolytelevelatleastonceperyear,particularlyafter
long-termstorageoranyotherperiodofvehicleinactivity.SeeprecedingCAUTION.
BATTERYCARE–VEHICLESWITHOUTTHESINGLE-POINTWATERINGSYSTEM(SPWS)
Tokeepbatteriesingoodworkingcondition,followthismaintenanceprogramonaregularbasis:
1.Keepthebatteriescleanandfreeofcorrosion.Washtopsandterminalsofbatterieswithasolutionofbaking
sodaandwater;use1cup(237mL)bakingsodaper1gallon(3.8L)ofwater.Rinsesolutionoffofthebatteries.
Donotallowthissolutiontoenterthebattery.Besureterminalsaretight.Lettheterminalsdryandthencoatwith
BatteryT erminalProtectorSpray.SeefollowingNOTE.
NOTE:Disposeofwastewaterproperly.
2.Checktheelectrolytelevelweekly(Figure14-3).Addwateronlyafterchargingunlesstheelectrolytelevelis
belowthetopoftheplates.Inthiscase,addjustenoughwatertocovertheplates,charge,andthencheckthe
levelagain.Neverchargebatteriesifplatesareexposedaboveelectrolytelevel.Forbestbatterylife,addonly
distilledwater.SeefollowingCAUTIONandNOTE.

NOTE:AbatterywateringgunorbottleisavailablefromyourauthorizedClubCardealer.
3.Thebatteryhold-downsshouldbetightenoughsothatthebatteriesdonotmovewhilethevehicleisinmotion,
butnotsotightastocrackorbucklethebatterycase.For8-voltbatteries,tightenhold-downretainingnutsto
106lb·in(12N·m).Theterminalconnectionsshouldbecleanandtight,andanyworninsulationorfrayedwires
shouldbereplaced.Tightenbatteryterminalstopropertorque.SeeConnectingtheBatteries–Electric
