GENERALINFORMATION
Thetorqueconverterconsistsofadriveclutch,adrivenclutch,andadrivebelt.Thedriveclutch,whichismountedto
theengine,isintheopenpositionwhentheengineisatidle.Atthispoint,thebeltisridingatalowposition(smaller
diameter)onthedriveclutch.Thedrivenclutchismountedonthetransaxle.Itisintheclosedposition,andthedrive
beltisridingatahighposition(largediameter)onitwhentheengineisatidle.
Atthepointofclutchengagement,thespeedratioofthedriveclutchtothedrivenclutchprovidesexcellentstartingand
low-speedtorque.
Asenginespeedincreases,centrifugalforceoninternalweightsclosethedriveclutch,pushingthebeltuptoahigher
positionontheclutch(increasingthediameterofthebeltloop).Asthediameterofthebeltloopincreasesatthedrive
clutch,thedrivenclutchisforcedopenasthediameterofitsbeltloopdecreases.
Onsteepgrades,orwhenthevehicleisheavilyloaded,highertorquesareachievedthroughtheuseofa
torque-sensingrampdeviceonthedrivenclutch.Thisdeviceovercomestheforceofthecentrifugalweightstoclose
thedrivenclutchandopenthedriveclutch,thusincreasingaxletorquewithlittleornochangeinengineRPM.
Theengineandtorqueconverterrotatecounter-clockwiseasviewedfromtheclutchsideoftheengine.
Toprovideoptimumperformancefortheengineandpowertrain,thevehicleusesapairoftunedclutches.
Toproperlyassembleanddisassemblethetorqueconverter,thefollowingtoolsshouldbeused:
•ClutchT ools(Figure23-1,Page23-2).
•Scribeorsmallpick(notincludedwithclutchtools).

Maintainingproperadjustmentoftheengineandgovernor,aswellasthetorqueconverter,isessentialtothe
troubleshootingprocess.Iftheseadjustmentsarewithinspecicationsand,whenclimbingasteephill,theengine
beginstoloseRPMbeforethedrivebeltreachesthetopofthedrivenclutch,thereisatorqueconverterproblem.
Ifthetorqueconverterisnotoperatingproperly,performthefollowingsteps:
1.Checkthegovernorandthrottlesettings.SeeEngineControlLinkagesonpage21-8.
2.Inspectthedrivenclutchfordirtanddustbuilduponitscomponentparts.Cleanthedrivenclutchwithwaterto
removeanydustordirt,thendrivethevehicleandcheckforproperoperation.
