MUFFLERREMOVAL
1.Disconnectbatteryandsparkplugwire(s).SeeDisconnectingtheBattery-GasolineVehiclesonpage1-3.
2.Ifequipped,removeairdeectorfromtopofengine.
3.Removethelocknut(1)securingthemufer(2)toitsmountingbracket(Figure22-1,Page22-2).
4.Removethehexnuts(3)andlockwashers(4)atthecylinderheadandremovemufer(2)fromvehicle.
MUFFLERINSTALLATION
NOTE:Anytimethemuferisremovedfromthevehicle,installanewexhaustgasket(5).
Twodifferentexhaustgasketshavebeenused;onewitharaisedportopening,thathassincebeenreplaced
bytheother;aat,metal-reinforced,graphitegasket.Followinstructionsbelowforproperorientationofthe
exhaustgasketwithraisedportopening.
1.Ifmuferbracket(6)wasloosenedorremoved,tightenbolts(9)to17ft·lb(23N·m)andthenbolts(7)to50
ft·lb(68N·m)(Figure22-1,Page22-2).
2.Replaceexhaustgasket(5)onthecylinderheadexhaustportstudswithanewgasket.Forexhaustgasketwith
raisedportopening,orientgasket(5)withraisedsectionofgasketupagainsttheangeofthemufer.
3.Placemufer(2)intopositionandlooselysecureittomountingbracketwithlocknut(1)andtocylinderhead
withlockwashers(4)andhexnuts(3).
4.Tightenhardwareinthefollowingorder:
4.1.Atthecylinderhead,tightenpassenger-sidehexnut(3)to15ft·lb(20N·m).
4.2.Atthecylinderhead,tightendriver-sidehexnut(3)to15ft·lb(20N·m).
4.3.Atthemountingbracket,tightenlocknut(1)to34ft·lb(46N·m).
5.Ifequipped,installairdeectorontopofengine.
6.Connectbatteryandsparkplugwire(s).SeeConnectingtheBattery-GasolineVehiclesonpage1-3.
7.PlacetheshifterhandleinNEUTRAL,theneutrallockoutswitchinMAINTENANCE,andchockthewheels.
8.Starttheengineandcheckforexhaustleaksandproperengineoperation.SeefollowingDANGER.
DANGER
•Donotoperategasolinevehicleinanenclosedareawithoutproperventilation.Theengineproduces
carbonmonoxide,whichisanodorless,deadlypoison.
