STARTER/GENERATORREMOVAL
1.Disconnectbatteryandsparkplugwire(s).SeeDisconnectingtheBattery-GasolineVehiclesonpage1-3.
2.PlacetheneutrallockoutswitchintheMAINTENANCEposition.Accesstheenginecompartmentbyremoving
theseatorraisingthecargobed.
3.Disconnectthewiresfromthestarter/generator(1)(Figure19-14,Page19-13).
4.Loosenthepivotnuts(7)andbolts(5)(Figure19-13,Page19-12).
5.Removetheadjustmentnut(4),washer(6)andadjustmentbolt(1)(Figure19-13,Page19-12).Lowerthe
starter/generatorandremovethebelt(2)fromthepulley.
6.Supportthestarter/generatorsothatwhenthepivotbolts(5)areremovedthestarter/generatorwillnotfall.
Removethetwopivotnuts(7)andbolts(5)fromthemountingbracket.
7.Removethestarter/generator.
DISASSEMBLYOFTHESTARTER/GENERATORTOSERVICETHEBRUSHES
1.Removethetwobolts(20)andpullcommutatorendcover(23)freeofstarter/generatorhousing(24)(Figure
19-1,Page19-2).SeefollowingNOTE.
NOTE:Ifthebrushesarenotremoved,contactbetweenthebrushesandcommutatorasthecommutatorendcoveris
beingremovedorinstalledcoulddamagethebrushes.Liftthebrushspringsoutofthenotchesinthebrushes
andpullthebrushesbackfromthecenterofthecommutatorendcover.Thespringswillrestonthesidesof
thebrushesandhelppreventthemfromslidingtowardsthecenterofthecover(Figure19-5,Page19-4).
2.Removebrushcovers(29and30),terminalhardware(25),brushsprings(28),andbrushes(27)(Figure19-2,
