LEAFSPRINGREMOVAL
1.ElectricVehicle:Disconnectthebatteriesanddischargethecontroller.SeeDisconnectingtheBatteries–
ElectricVehiclesonpage1-4.
GasolineVehicle:Disconnectbatteryandsparkplugwire(s).
SeeDisconnectingtheBattery-GasolineVehiclesonpage1-3.
2.Loosen,butdonotremove,lugnutsontireandwheelassemblyonthesidefromwhichthespringistobe
removed.Placechocksatthefrontwheelsandlifttherearofthevehiclewithachainhoistoroorjack.Position
jackstandsundertheframecrossmemberforwardofthespringmountingtabs.Lowerthevehicletoletthejack
standssupportthevehicle(Figure9-1,Page9-3).SeefollowingWARNING.
WARNING
•Liftonlyoneendofthevehicleatatime.Useasuitableliftingdevice(chainhoistorhydraulicoor
jack)with1000lb.(454kg)minimumliftingcapacity.Donotuseliftingdevicetoholdvehicleinraised
position.Useapprovedjackstandsofproperweightcapacitytosupportthevehicleandchock
thewheelsthatremainontheoor.Whennotperformingatestorserviceprocedurethatrequires
movementofthewheels,lockthebrakes.
3.Placeaoorjackunderthetransaxledifferentialcasingtosupport,butnotlift,thedrivetrain.Raiseitjustenough
torelievetensionontheshockabsorberswithoutcompressingthem.
4.Removethetireandwheelassemblyonthesidefromwhichthespringistoberemoved.
5.Removethebowtielockingpin(1)andtheclevispin(2)atthebrakeleverandbrakecableconnection,and
removecableend(3)fromthebrakelever(Figure9-2,Page9-3).Detachthebrakecablefromtheshockmount
bracket(4).SeeBrakeCableRemoval,Section6,Page6-12.
6.Removethenut(5),cupwasher(9),andrubberbushings(10)fromthelowermountingstemoftheshock
absorber(Figure9-3,Page9-4).
7.Removethenuts(13)andtheU-bolt(11)securingthespringtothetransaxle.Removetheshockmountbracket
(15)andtheU-bolt.
8.Removethebolt(17)andnut(2)attachingtherearofthespringtotheshackle(1).
9.Removethenut(2)andbolt(17)attachingthefrontofthespringtothevehicleframeandremovethespring.
10.Inspectthebushings(4)andsleeves(3)inthespringeyesandreplacethemiftheyarewornordamaged.
