GENERALINFORMATION
TheVillager2vehicleisequippedwithself-adjusting,mechanically-expandingshoe,drumbrakesoneachrearwheel.

1.ElectricVehicle:Disconnectthebatteriesanddischargethecontroller.SeeDisconnectingtheBatteries–
ElectricVehiclesonpage1-4.GasolineVehicle:Disconnectbatteryandsparkplugwire(s).

2.Placechocksatthefrontwheels.Loosen,butdonotremove,lugnutsonrearwheelsandlifttherearofthe
vehiclewithachainhoistoroorjack.Placejackstandsundertheaxletubestosupportthevehicle.See

3.Gainaccesstothepedalgroupbyremovingtheoormatandaccesspanel.SeePedalGroupRemoval
onpage5-1.
4.Loosenthetwojamnuts(1and3)oneithersideofturnbuckle(2)(Figure6-1,Page6-2).Notethattheforward
jamnut(1)isaleft-handthread.Threadeachnutapproximately1/2inch(12.7mm)awayfromtheturnbuckle.
5.Loosenturnbuckle(2)toreleasetensionontheequalizerbracket(4)thatpullsontheheadsofthebrakecables.
6.Removetherearwheelsandthenthebrakedrums.Ifthebrakedrumswereeasilyremoved,proceedtostep8.
CAUTION
•Wornordamagedbrakedrumscannotbemachinedtorenishthem.Replaceasnecessary.
NOTE:Whenservicingvehicleswithseverelywornbrakeshoesandwhenthedrumscannotberemovedbynormal
methods,proceedtostep7tominimizedamagetothebrakeclusterandbrakecomponents.
