GENERALINFORMATION

ThisvehicleispoweredbyaSubaruEX40,high-compression,chaindriven,overheadcamengine.Theengineoffersa
heavy-dutyconstructionfeaturingcastironcylinderlinerforlongerlife,dualballbearingcrankshaftsupport,lowoil
levelsensorandheavy-dutyaircleanersystem,tonameafewcharacteristics.SeefollowingNOTE.
NOTE:Enginerotationiscounterclockwiseasviewedfromtheclutchsideoftheengine.
Thissectioncontainsinformationforremovingandreplacingtheengine.Forcompleteinstructiononengine
disassembly,repair,rebuilding,andreassembly,seeyourauthorizeddealer.
Testcylindercompressionusingastandardcompressiontester.Lowcompressionwouldnormallyindicateaproblem
inthecylinderassemblysuchasdefectiverings,gaskets,etc.Compressionshouldbe:
Atanormalcrankingspeedof1050to1100RPM,thecompressionshouldtypicallybeapproximately167psig(1151
kPa).Thisvaluecouldvaryslightlydependingonwearofcomponentsaffectingcompression.

Whenturningthecrankshaftbyhand,alwaysturnitcounterclockwiseasviewedfromtheclutchsideoftheengine.
