GENERALINFORMATION
Thevehiclesaddressedinthismanualareequippedwithheavy-dutytransaxles.Thetransaxleutilizesinternalgearing
tochangevehicledirection.Becausethetransaxleisusedtoreversevehicledirection,theengine,driveclutch,belt,
anddrivenclutchrotateinthesamedirection;therefore,theengineandclutchesarenotsubjectedtoreversingloads.
Thisreducesmaintenancerequirementsontheengineandclutches.Withthetransaxle,poweristransferredfromthe
enginethroughthedriveclutch,thedrivebelt,thedrivenclutch,andthenthroughthetransaxletothewheels.
SHIFTERLEVER
Ashifterlever,connectedtoashifterarm,isusedtochangethegearstooneofthreeshiftpositions:FORWARD(F),
NEUTRAL(N),orREVERSE(R).BringthevehicletoacompletestopbeforechangingFORWARDorREVERSE
direction.
NEUTRALLOCKOUT
Fortheconvenienceofthetrainedtechnician,thereisaneutrallockoutswitchlocatedontheseatsupportpanelunder
theseat(Figure24-1,Page24-1).Theneutrallockoutswitchhastwopositions,MAINTENANCEandOPERATE,
whichareclearlymarked.

Duringnormalvehicleoperation,theneutrallockoutswitchintheOPERATEpositionpreventstheenginefromrunning
whentheForward/ReversehandleisintheNEUTRALposition.IfavehicleisstartedinFORWARDorREVERSEand
thenshiftedtoNEUTRAL,theenginewillstoprunning.
WhentheswitchisintheMAINTENANCEposition,itwillallowthetechniciantoruntheengineintheNEUTRAL
positiontoperformcertainmaintenanceand/orrepairfunctions.Withtheswitchinthisposition,thevehiclewillnot
operateiftheForward/ReversehandleisplacedineithertheFORWARDorREVERSEposition.Seefollowing
