brakepads by performing avisual inspection to
look forpad material wear.
If youare unabletocheckthe brakepad wear on
theinside of thewheels, remove thewheels if
youpossess therequired skills, or visit aqualified
specialistworkshop.
If thebrakepad material thickness is less than
0.12 in (3 mm), have thebrakepads checkedand
replaced at aqualified specialistworkshop, if
necessary.
Do notsolely rely on thebrakepad wear sensor.
It is also strongly recommended that youhave
thebrakepads checkedataqualified specialist
workshop, notonly at every service displayedby
themaintenanceintervaldisplay, but also prior to
long journeys and whenever thewheels are
removed.
Newbrake discs and brakepads
Newbrakepads and brakediscsonly reachtheir
optimal braking effect afterapproximately
100miles(100kilometers).
Untilthen, compensatefor thereduced braking
effect by applying greater pressuretothe brake
pedal. Forsafetyreasons, Mercedes-Benz recom‐
mends that youonlyhavebrakepads and brake
discs whichare approvedbyMercedes-Benz
installed on your vehicle.
Other brakediscs or brakepads maycompromise
thesafetyofyour vehicle.
Alwaysreplace all brakediscs and brakepads on
an axle at thesame time. Alwaysinstall new
brakepads when replacing brakediscs.
Parking brake
&
WARNING Risk of skidding or an acci‐
dent by braking withthe parking brake
If youhave to brakeyour vehicle withthe
parking brake, thebraking distance is consid‐
erably longer and thewheels maylock. There
is an increased risk of skidding and/or acci‐
dent.
#
Only brakethe vehicle withthe parking
brakeifthe service brakehas failed.
#
In this case, do notapplythe parking
brakewithtoo muchforce.
#
If thewheels lock, immediately release
theparking brakeasmuchasrequired
forthe wheels to turnagain.
Vehicles with amanual parking brake
When driving on wetroads or dirt-coveredsurfa‐
ces, road salt or dirtmay get intothe parking
brake. This causes corrosion and areduction of
braking force.
In order to prevent this, drivewiththe parking
brakelightlyapplied from time to time.
Whendoing so, drivefor adistance of approx‐
imately300 ft at amaximum speed of 13 mph
(20 km/h).
The brakelights do notlight up when youbrake
thevehicle withthe parking brake.

Hydroplaning
&
WARNING Risk of aquaplaning because
tiretread is toolow
Depending on thedepth of thewater on the
roadway,aquaplaning can occur despitesuffi‐
cient tiretread depth and lowspeed.
#
Avoid tireruts andbrake carefully.
Therefore, inheavy rain or other conditions in
whichhydroplaning can occur, driveasfollows:
R
Reduce your speed.
R
Avoid tireruts.
R
Brakecarefully.
Drivingonflooded roads
Bear in mind that vehicles traveling in front or in
theoppositedirection createwaves. This may
cause themaximum permissible depth of water
to be exceeded. These notesmustbeobserved
underall circumstances. Otherwise, youcan
damagethe engine, electrics and transmission.
If youhave to driveonstretches of road on which
waterhas collected, please bearinmind thefol‐
lowing:
