Diesel particulatefilter
Notesonregeneration
&
DANGER Risk of fatalinjuries due to
exhaustgases
Combustionengines emit poisonous exhaust
gases suchascarbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaustgases is hazardoustohealth
and can lead to poisoning.
#
Neverleave theengine running in an
enclosedspace without sufficient venti‐
lation.
&
WARNING Risk of fire caused by hot
exhaustsystemparts
Flammable material suchasleaves, grass or
twigs mayigniteiftheycome intocontact
with hotparts of theexhaust system or
exhaustgas flow.
#
Park thevehicle so that no flammable
material can comeintocontact with hot
vehicle components.
#
In particular,donot parkondry grass‐
land or harvested grain fields.
If thevehicle is predominantlyused forshortdis‐
tance driving or extendednon-operationaltimes,
this could lead to amalfunctioninthe automatic
cleaning function forthe diesel particulatefilter.
As aresult, permanent blocking of thediesel par‐
ticulatefilter mayoccur and fuel mayalso accu‐
mulateinthe engine oil and cause engine failure.
If youmainly driveshortdistances, youshould
driveonafreeway or go foracountrydrive for20
minutes every 500 km (300 miles). This facili‐
tatesthe diesel particulatefilter's burn-offproc‐
ess.
*
NOTE Damage due to hotexhaust gases
During regeneration, extremely hotexhaust
gases escape from thetailpipe.
#
During regeneration, maintainamini‐
mum distanceof7ft(2m)fromother
objects, e.g. parkedvehicles.
Batterymain switch

*
NOTE Damage to theelectrical system
If youremove or disconnect thebatterymain
switch, it could lead to theelectrical system
becomingdamaged.
#
Makesurethat theignition is switched
offand that at least15minutes have
passed beforeremoving or reconnecting
thebatterymain switch. Otherwise,
electrical system components could be
damaged.
Youcan use thebatterymain switchtodiscon‐
nect thecurrent to all your vehicle's consumers.
This will prevent uncontrolledbattery discharge
caused by quiescent current consumers.
If your vehicle is equipped withanauxiliary bat‐
tery in theengine compartmentorinthe base of
thefront-passengerseat, youmustdisconnect
both batteries. Onlythen is theelectrical system
fully disconnected from thepower supply.
%
Only disconnect thevehicle from thepower
supply using thebatterymain switchinthe
following situations:
R
The vehicle is stationaryfor along time
R
It is absolutely necessarytodisconnect
thevehicle from thepower supply
Afterswitching on thepowersupply,you will
need to resetthe side windows (/ page54)
andthe electric sliding door (/ page50).
