Preparing thevehicle forawheel change
Requirements:

The tire-changetool kit is available.
R
The vehicle is notonaslope.
R
The vehicle is on solid, non-slipperyand level
ground.

Applythe parking brake.
#
Move thefront wheels to thestraight-ahead
position.
#
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
shiftthe transmission to position j.
#
Switchoff theengine.
#
Makesurethat theengine cannot be started.
#
Take thevehicle tool kit from thefootwell on
thefront passsenger side (/ page291).
Vehicles with rear wheel drive
#
Take thejackand thetire-changetool kit out
of thestowage compartment (/ page312).
#
If necessary,remove thehub cab.
#
Assemble thelug wrenchextensionusing the
middlerod and therod withthe largest diam‐
eter from thethree-piece jackpumplever.
#
Startingwiththe middle rod, slide thelug
wrenchextensionasfar as it will go ontothe
lug wrench.
#
Using thelug wrench, loosen thewheel nuts
or bolts on thewheel youwish to changeby
about one full turn. Do notunscrew thewheel
nuts or bolts completely.
#
Raise thevehicle (/ page313).

WARNING Risk of injury from jacktip‐
ping
If youparkavehicle withair suspension, the
air suspension mayremain activatedfor up to
one hour,evenwhen theignition is switched
off. If youthen raise thevehicle withthe jack,
theair suspension will attempt to adjustthe
vehicle level.
The jackmay tip.

Press theService button on theair sus‐
pension remote control beforeraising
thevehicle.
This prevents automatic readjustment
of thevehicle leveland prevents it from
being raised or loweredmanually.

WARNING Risk of injury from incorrect
positioning of thejack
If youdonot positionthe jackcorrectlyatthe
appropriatejackingpointofthe vehicle, the
jackcould tip with thevehicle raised.

Onlyposition thejackatthe appropriate
jacking point of thevehicle. The base of
thejackmustbepositioned vertically
under thejacking point of thevehicle.

WARNING Risk of injury from vehicle tip‐
ping
On slopes, thejackcould tip withthe vehicle
raised.
#
Neverchangeawheel on aslope.
#
Consult aqualified specialistworkshop.

If youdonot positionthe jackcorrectlyatthe
appropriatejacksupportpointofthe vehicle,
thejackcould tip overwiththe vehicle raised.
