Seat belts
Protection provided by theseat belt
Alwaysfastenyour seat belt correctlybefore
startingajourney.Aseatbeltcan only provide
thebestlevel of protection if it is worn correctly.

WARNING Risk of injury or deathdue to
incorrectlyfastened seat belt
If theseat belt is notworncorrectly,itcannot
perform its intended protectivefunction.
In addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt
can also cause injuries, forexample, in the
event of an accident or when braking or
changing direction suddenly.

Alwaysensurethat all vehicle occupants
have their seat belts fastened correctly
and aresitting properly.
Alwaysobserve theinstructionsabout thecorrect
driver's seatpositionand adjusting theseats
(/ page60).
In order forthe correctly worn seat belt to pro‐
vide theintended levelofprotection,eachvehicle
occupant mustobserve thefollowing information:

The seat belt mustnot be twistedand mustfit
tightlyand snuglyacross thebody.
R
The seat belt mustberouted across thecen‐
terofthe shoulder and as lowdownacross
thehips as possible.
R
The shoulder section of theseat belt should
nottouchyour necknor be routed underyour
armorbehindyour back.
R
Avoid wearing bulkyclothing, e.g. awinter
coat.
R
Push thelap belt down as faraspossible
across your hips and pull tight withthe shoul‐
der section of thebelt. Neverroutethe lap
belt across your abdomen.
Pregnant women mustalso take particular
carewiththis.
R
Neverroutethe seat belt across sharp, poin‐
ted, abrasiveorfragile objects.
R
Onlyone person mayuse eachseat belt at
anyone time. Infants and children mustnever
travelsitting on thelap of avehicle occupant.
R
Neversecureobjects withaseat belt if the
seat belt is being used by one of thevehicle's
occupants. Alwaysobserve theinstructions
forloading thevehicle when securing objects,
luggageorloads (/ page73).
Also ensure that no objects, e.g.acushion,
areeverplaced between aperson and the
seat.
The seat belts on thefollowing seats areequip‐
ped withaspecial seatbelt retractor:

Co-driver seat
R
Rear seats
Activateordeactivate thespecial seatbelt retrac‐
torofthe seat belt (/ page36).
If children aretraveling in thevehicle, be sureto
observe theinstructionsand safetynotes on
"Children in thevehicle" (/ page35).
Limitations of theprotection provided by the
seat belt

WARNING Risk of injury or deathdue to
incorrect seatposition
The seatbeltdoesnot offerthe intended level
of protection if youhavenot movedthe seat
backresttoanalmostvertical position.
When braking or in theevent of an accident,
youcouldslide underneaththe seat belt and
sustain abdominal or neckinjuries, forexam‐
ple.

Adjustthe seat properly beforebegin‐
ning your journey.
#
Alwaysensurethat theseat backrestis
in an almostvertical position and that
theshoulder section of your seat belt is
routed across thecenter of your shoul‐
der.

WARNING Risk of injury or deathwhen
additional restraint systems arenot used
forpersons withasmaller build
Persons under 5ft(1.50 m) tall cannotwear
theseat belt correctly without asuitable addi‐
tional restraint system.
If theseat belt is notworncorrectly,itcannot
perform its intended protectivefunction. In
addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt can
also cause injuries, forexample, in theevent
of an accident or when braking or changing
direction suddenly.

Alwayssecurepersons under 5ft
(1.50 m) tall in asuitable restraint sys‐
tem.
