Immediately rinse surfaces that comein
contact with DEF when filling withwater
or remove DEF with adampcloth and
coldwater.
If DEF has alreadycrystallized, clean using a
sponge and coldwater.
If youopen theDEF tank, small amounts of
ammoniavapor maybereleased. Do notinhale
anyammonia vapor that maybereleased. Fill the
DEF tank only in well-ventilated areas.
DEF consumption and filling capacity
DEF consumption
Likefuel consumption, DEFconsumption is highly
dependent upon driving styleand operating con‐
ditions. DEFconsumption is usuallywithin a
rangeof0and 10%ofthe fuel consumption. If
necessary, DEF must be refilled in accordance
withthe instructions when therefill messageis
displayedinthe instrument cluster. This mayalso
be necessarybetween thescheduled mainte‐
nance.

Exhaust gasaftertreatment
The exhaustgas aftertreatment system mustbe
operated in conjunction withDEF if it is to func‐
tion correctly.
If youoperatethe vehicle without DEF or with
emissions-relevant malfunctions,the legal MOT
approval is invalidated. Youwill then probably no
longer be permitted to operatethe vehicle on
public roads.
It maybeimproper or punishable in somecoun‐
tries to operateavehicle that uses no DEForone
that does notcomplywiththe specifications of
these operating instructions.
Engine management monitorsthe exhaustgas
aftertreatment componentsfor compliance with
emissions laws and regulations. If youattempt to
operatethe vehicle without DEF,withdiluted DEF
or withadifferent reducing agent, this will be
detected by theengine management system.
Other emissions-relevant malfunctions,e.g.
metering malfunctions or sensor errors, are also
detected and logged.
The enginemanagement system subsequently
prevents theengine being restartedafter issuing
awarning message.
Thereforeadd DEFtank regularly during vehicle
operation or,atthe latest, afterreceiving thefirst
warning messagevia theinstrument cluster.
