If youdonot connectthe trailer to thetowing
vehicle correctly, thetrailer maybecome
detached. Onceithas been connected and is
roadworthy, thetrailer mustbeinahorizontal
position behind thetowing vehicle.
Note thefollowing regarding thetongue weight:

Makefull use of themaximum tongueweight,
wherepossible

Do notexceed or fall belowthe permitted
tongueweight
Do notexceed thefollowing values:

Permitted braked or unbraked towing capa‐
city
The maximum permissible towing capacity for
trailers without aseparatebrakingsystemis
1,653 lbs (750 kg).

Permissible rear axle load of thetowing vehi‐
cle
R
Permissible gross mass of thetowing vehicle
R
Permissible gross mass of thetrailer
R
Permissible gross towing mass
R
Maximum permissible speed of thetrailer
The relevant permitted values, whichmustnot be
exceeded, can be found in thefollowing places:

In your vehicle documents
R
On theidentification plateofthe trailer hitch
R
On thetrailer's identification plate
R
On thevehicle identification plate
If thereare discrepancies between thevalues, the
lowest one shall apply.
Beforedriving off, ensure thefollowing:

The tirepressureonthe rear axle of thetow
ing vehicle has been setfor themaximum
load.
R
The headlamps have been setcorrectly.
Values approvedbythe manufacturer can be
found on theidentification plates and in thesec‐
tion forthe towing vehicle (/ page297).
Your vehicle will act differentlywithatrailer rela‐
tivetowithout atrailer:

The vehicle/trailer combination will be heav‐
ier.
R
The vehicle/trailer combination will be
restricted in its acceleration and climbing
ability.
R
The vehicle/trailer combination will have an
increased brakingdistance.
R
The vehicle/trailer combination will be more
susceptible to crosswind gusts.
R
The vehicle/trailer combination will require
moresensitivesteering.
R
The vehicle/trailer combination will have a
largerturning radius.
This mayimpair thevehicle's driving characteris‐
tics.
When drivingwithavehicle/trailer combination,
alwaysadaptyour speed to thecurrent road and
weather conditions. Drivecarefully. Keep asuffi‐
cient safedistance.
Comply with themaximum speed of 49 mph
(80 km/h) or 62 mph(100km/h), evenincoun‐
triesinwhich higherspeedsare permitted for
vehicle/trailer combinations.
Comply withthe legally prescribed maximum
speed forvehicle/trailer combinationsinforce in
thecountry,state or Canadian provinceinques‐
tion. Beforedriving, consult thetrailer's vehicle
documents to see themaximum permissible
speed foryour trailer.
Attach onlyanapprovedtrailer hitchtoyourvehi‐
cle. Use onlyaball neckthat has been approved
foryour vehicle. Further information about availa‐
bilityand installation of thetrailer electrical sys‐
temisavailable from anyqualified specialist
workshop.
The trailer hitchisone of themostimportant
vehicle parts forroad safety. Complywiththe
instructions on operating, maintaining and servic‐
ing in themanufacturer's operating instructions.

Your vehicle's bumpersare notsuitable for
installing detachable trailer towhitches.
Do notattachany rented trailertow hitches or
anyother detachable trailer towhitches to the
bumpers.

When using atrailer,remember that
PARKTRONICisavailable onlytoalimited
extent, if at all.

The ball headheight will changedepending
on thevehicle's load. In this case, use a
trailer withaheight-adjustable drawbar.
