WARNING Danger of burnswhen open‐
ing thehood
If youopen thehood when theengine has
overheated or during afireinthe engine com‐
partment, youcouldcomeintocontact with
hotgases or other escaping operating fluids.
#
Beforeopening thehood, allowthe
engine to cool down.
#
In theevent of afireinthe engine com‐
partment, keep thehood closed and call
thefireservice.
&
WARNING Risk of scalding from hot
coolant
The engine cooling system is pressurized,
particularly when theengine is warm.Ifyou
open thecap, youcouldbescalded by hot
coolant spraying out.
#
Letthe engine cool down beforeopen‐
ing thecap.
#
When opening thecap, wear protective
glovesand safetyglasses.
#
Open thecap slowlytorelease pres‐
sure.
Allowthe engine and theengine cooling system
to cool down beforechecking thecoolant levelor
refilling coolant.
*
NOTE Paintwork damagedue to coolant
If coolant getsonpainted surfaces, thepaint‐
work can be damaged.
#
Addcoolant carefully.
#
Remove spilledcoolant.
Checking thecoolant level
Example: coolant expansion reservoir
#
Park thevehicle on an even surface.
#
Openthe hood (/ page264).
#
Slowlyturncoolant expansion reservoir cap
1 half aturncounter-clockwise and allow
excess pressuretoescape.
#
Turn coolant expansion reservoir cap 1 fur‐
ther and remove it.
#
Checkthe coolant level.
Thereisenough coolantincoolantexpansion
reservoir if thecoolant reaches theMAX
mark.
Adding coolant
#
Refill thecoolant to theMAX markonthe
coolant expansion reservoir.
Onlyuse coolantapproved by Mercedes-Benzto
avoid damagingthe engine cooling system.
#
Replace coolant expansion reservoir cap 1
and tighteninaclockwise direction.
#
Startthe engine.
#
Afterapproximately five minutes, switchoff
theengine again and allowittocool down.
#
Check thecoolant levelagain and add coolant
if necessary.
