indicator lampinthe instrument displaylights up.
The electric parking brakeisonlyactuallyapplied
when thered F and ! (USA) or !
(Canada) indicator lamps light up continuously.
Releasing theelectric parking brakeautomat‐
ically
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
The electric parking brakeofyour vehicle is
released when all of thefollowing conditionsare
fulfilled:
R
The driver is sitting in thedriver's seat.
R
The driver is belted.
R
The engine is running.
R
The transmissionisinposition h or k and
youdepress theaccelerator
or
Youswitch from transmission position j to
position h or k.You mustalso depress the
accelerator if traveling on steep uphill gradi‐
ents.
R
If thetransmission is in position k,the rear-
end doorsmustbeclosed.
Applying/releasing theelectric parking brake
manually

If youleave children and animals unattended
in thevehicle, they maybeabletoset the
vehicle in motion, forexample by:

Releasing theparking brake.

Shifting theautomatic transmission out of

Startingthe engine.
In addition, they mayoperatevehicle equip‐
ment and become trapped.

Neverleave children and animals unat‐
tendedinthe vehicle.

When leaving thevehicle, alwaystake
theSmartKey withyou and lockthe
vehicle.

To apply: press switch 1.
When theelectric parking brakeisapplied,
thered F and ! (USA) or ! (Can‐
ada) indicator lamps light up in theinstru‐
ment display. The electric parking brakeis
onlyactuallyapplied when thered F
and ! (USA) or ! (Canada) indicator
lamps light up continuously.
It is also possible to applythe electric parking
brakewhen theignition is switched off.

To release: pull switch 1.
The red F and ! (USA) or ! (Can‐
ada) indicator lamps in theinstrument display
go out.
Youmay only release theelectric parking
brakeifthe ignition is switched on withthe
start/stop button.
