Ethernet as basis for PROFINET only permits a single, unique data path from the controller to
a de
vice via a line-type topology or a s
tar-type topology. MRP allows a line-type topology to
be closed using a redundancy manager to create a ring-type topology. This means that every
device can be accessed via 2 data paths.
When a device fails or if a cable is interrupted, the redundancy manager informs the device
that the ring-type topology has now been switched over to a linear-type topology. The
devices can be accessed again once a switchover has been made to a linear-type topology.
When the cable is interrupted, a short-time interruption (0...200ms) of the data transfer
may occur until the redundant data path is switched.
If a short-time interruption is not allowed, there are two alternative ways:
• Set the watchdog time in the hardware conguration above 200ms.
• Set the data transfer to IRT High Performance.
