When valve guides are worn so that there

excessive valve stem-to-guide clearance

the valve guide

ced: also replace the
respective valve.

Remove the cylinder head from the oven and
hold onto
it
with kitchen pot holders. heavy gloves
or heavy shop cloth

er head. place the
new valve guides
in
a freezer (or refrigerator) if
possible. Ch
ill
ing them will slightly reduce their

I. Remove the screws securing the intake pipe
(Figure
139
)
Onto
the cylinder head. Remo
ve
the
intake pipe before placing the cylinder head
in
the
oven.

The

ve
guides (Figure

) are installed with
a slight interference fit.
Place the cyl
in
de
r head
in
a heated oven (or on a hot plate). Heat the
cy
linder head to a temperature between
100-150°
C
(2
12-
300
° F). An easy
way
to check the proper
temperature is to drop tiny drops
of
water on the
cyl
in
der head: if they sizzle a
nd
evaporate
immediately. the temperature is
correc!.
CAUTION
Do
nOI
hem the cylinder head with a
lorch (propane
or
a
ce
tylene); ne\'er
bring a flame into contact with the
cylinder head
or
\'O/w
! guide.
The
direct heat will destrqy the case
hardening
of
the
mlve
guide and wiff
likely ellllse warpage
qf
the cylinder
head.
