SWING
ARM
In time, the needle bearings will wear and
will
have to be replaced. The condition
of
the bearings
can greatly affect handling performance.
If worn
parts are
nO
I replaced, they can produce erratic and
dangerous handling. Common symptoms are wheel
hop. pulling to one side during acceleration and
pulling to the other side during braking.
Remo\'al
I.
Place
wood
block(s) under the engine and frame
to
support the bike securely with the rear wheel
orr
the
ground.
2.
Remove the drive belt (A. Fig
ur
e 53)
as
described
in
th
is chapter.
3.
Remove the cap (
B.
Fig
ur
e 53) from
eac
h side
of
the frame covering the pivot bolt and nut.
4.
Remove the shock absorbers as described
in
this
chapter.
5.
Remove the rcar wheel as described
in
this
chapter.
6.
Grasp the rear end of the sw ing arm and try to
move it fr
om
side-to-side
in
a horizontal arc. There
should be
no
noticeable side play. Ifplay
is
evident
and the pi
vot
bolt is tightened correctly. the needle
bear
i
ng
s should be replaced.
7.
Loosen the locknuts (A. Fig
ur
e 54) on the rear
brake cable and remove the cable from the
receptacle
(B. Fig
ur
e 54) on the swing arm. Be
careful not to kink
or
damage the brake cable.
8.
Remove the self-locking nut and withdraw the
pivot bolt from the left-hand side.
9. Pu
ll
back on the swing
arm.
free it from the
drive belt and remove the swi
ng
arm from the
frame.
10
. Inspect the swing arm as described
in
this
chapter.
NOTE
Don
't
lose the dust seal and thrust
w(Jsheron each side
of
the
pil'Ot
points:
they may fall
off
when the
sw
ing arm
is removed.
In
stallation
I. Make sure the
wa
sher and dust seal are
correctly
in
stalled at each side
of
the swing arm.
2. Position the
swing arm into the mounting area
of
the frame. Align the holes in the swing
ann
with
