TIPS
Rem
ovi
ng Frozen Nuts and Screws
When a faslener rusts and cannot
be
removed,
several methods
ma
y
be
used to loosen it. First.
apply penetrating oil such
as
Liquid
Wr
ench
or
WD-40
(av
ailable al any hardware
or
aUlo
supply
store). Apply
it
liberally and lei
it
penetrale for
10-15
minutes. Rap the fastener sever
al
times with
a small hammer: do
not
hit
it
hard enough
to
cause
damage. Reapply the penetrating oil if necessar
y.
For frozen screws. apply penetrating oil as de-
scribed, then
in
se
rt
a screwdriver
in
the s
lOi
and
rap the top
of
the screwdriver with a hammer. This
loosens the
ru
st so Ihe screw can
be
removed in
the normal
way.
If the screw head is too chewed
up
to
use a sc rewdriver. grip the head with Vise
Grip pliers and twist the screw out.

Occasionally, threads are
st
ripped through
carelessness
or
impact damage. Orten the threads
can be cleaned up
by
running a tap (for internal
th
reads on nuts) or die (for external threads on
bolts) through the threads (Figure 45).
To
clean
or
repair spark plug threads, a spark plug tap (Fig-
ure 46) can
be
used.
If the internal
th
reads
in
a part are damaged
beyond the use
of
a tap. the damaged threads can
be
replaced with a Heli-Coil.
or
equivalent.
