Operation
Refuelling
Low outside temperatures
The flow properties of diesel may be insuf-
ficient at low outside temperatures.
To prevent operating problems, diesel fuel
with improved cold flow qualities is availa-
ble during the winter months. Your vehicle
must be refuelled with this winter diesel at
temperatures below –5 °C.
Winter diesel can be used without prob-
lems at temperatures down to around
–20 °C.
If you are using summer diesel or a winter
diesel which is less resistant to cold, you
should add an amount of flow improver or
kerosene suitable for the outside tempera-
ture.
Add the additive to the diesel in good time,
before the flow properties of the diesel de-
teriorate. Faults can only be rectified by
warming the entire fuel system, e.g. by
parking the vehicle in a heated garage.
! Damage which occurs as a result of adding
petrol to diesel is not covered by the warranty.
Flow improvers
The effectiveness of a flow improver can-
not be guaranteed for every fuel. Observe
the information issued by the manufactur-
er when using a flow improver. Only use
flow improvers that have been tested and
approved by Mercedes-Benz. You can ob-
tain information about flow improvers that
have been tested and approved by
Mercedes-Benz from any Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre.
Kerosene
Adding 5% by volume of kerosene im-
proves the cold resistance of diesel by
approximately 1 °C. Kerosene must con-
stitute no more than 50% of the mixture.
! The proportion of kerosene should be as low
as possible whilst taking account of the outside
temperature.
Run the engine for a while to allow the ad-
ditive to be distributed throughout the en-
tire fuel system.
G Risk of fire
Do not use petrol to refuel vehicles with a
diesel engine. Do not mix diesel with petrol.
This would result in damage to the fuel sys-
tem and engine, which could lead to a vehi-
cle fire.
G Risk of explosion
Please note that a mixture of diesel and ker-
osene is more easily ignited than normal die-
sel.
Only mix kerosene with diesel in the fuel
tank.
First add the kerosene and then the diesel.
