Windowbags 1 are deployed:
ì•« at the start of an accident with high ve-
hicle acceleration or deceleration in a
lateral direction
ì•« on the side on which an impact occurs
ì•« independently of the front airbags
ì•« regardless of whether the front-pas-
senger seat is occupied
ì•« if the vehicle overturns on both sides
and the system determines that win-
dowbag deployment can offer addition-
al protection to that provided by the
seat belt

Preventive occupant safety (PRE-SAFE
®
)
initiates preventive measures in certain
hazardous situations for your safety.
PRE-SAFE
®
intervenes in:
ì•« emergency braking situations, e.g. if
Brake Assist BAS (
컄 page 54) is acti-
vated or Brake Assist BAS Plus*
(
컄 page 54) intervenes powerfully
ì•« critical driving situations, e.g. where
the vehicle understeers or oversteers
because it has exceeded physical limits
In these cases, PRE-SAFE
®
initiates the fol-
lowing measures if you are driving faster
than 30 km/h:
ì•« it tensions the front seat belts
ì•« it adjusts the seats to a better position
(
컄 page 259) if the front-passenger
seat or the electrically adjustable outer
seats in the rear compartment* are in
an unfavourable position
ì•« it increases the air pressure in the air
chambers (side bolsters of the seat
cushion and backrest) of the multi-con-
tour* (
컄 page 221) or dynamic driving
seats* (
컄 page 224)
ì•« if the vehicle understeers or overs-
teers, the sliding/tilting sunroof*
(
컄 page 359) and the side windows
(
컄 page 284) also close automatically
to leave a specific gap
If the hazardous situation passes without
resulting in an accident, PRE-SAFE
®
slack-
ens the belt pretensioning and reduces the
pressure in the air chambers of the multi-
contour seats or dynamic driving seats*. It
is possible to undo all the adjustments ini-
tiated by PRE-SAFE
®
.
