Technical terms
7G–TRONIC*
Automatic transmission with seven
gears.
A-pillar
Front pillar joining the roof to the body
(->B-pillar, ->C-pillar).
ABC*
(A
ctive Body Control)
Computer-assisted system that con-
trols the suspension according to the
situation with the aid of hydraulic sys-
tems installed at each wheel.
ABS
(a
nti-lock braking system)
Prevents the wheels from locking when
braking. This maintains the steerability
of the vehicle.
ADAPTIVE BRAKE
Brake system related to ->ABS, ->ESP
and ->BAS. ADAPTIVE BRAKE takes
into account the driver’s and vehicle’s
behaviour in order to achieve optimum
braking effect.
ADS
(a
daptive damping system)
System providing automatic control of
suspension force and optimum damp-
ing of the chassis as a function of the
load, road surface conditions and driv-
ing style.
Airmatic
Automatically adjusts the suspension
tuning for optimum performance and
controls the vehicle level.
ASR
(acceleration skid control)
Component of ->ESP. ASR controls the
drive of the wheels depending on the
situation thus improving ->traction.
ASSYST PLUS
(A
ctive Service System)
Service indicator of the ->instrument
cluster operating system that informs
you when a service is due.
The degree of brake pad/lining wear is
also displayed.
Asymmetrical dipped-beam headlamps
Dipped-beam headlamps setting that
further illuminates the outside edge of
the carriageway.
B-pillar
Centre pillar joining the roof to the
body (->A-pillar, ->C-pillar).
Ball coupling*
Securing device on the vehicle; part of
the trailer tow hitch to which a trailer is
coupled.
BAS
(B
rake Assist)
System for shortening the stopping dis-
tance in hazardous situations, activat-
ed by the driver depressing the brake
pedal rapidly. Braking force is boosted.
BAS Plus*
(B
rake Assist Plus)
System built on radar sensor technolo-
gy that assists braking in situations
where a risk of frontal collision is de-
tected. BAS Plus is activated in hazard-
ous situations by the driver depressing
the brake pedal rapidly. The braking
force is then adjusted according to the
traffic situation.
Bi-xenon headlamps*
->Xenon-headlamps in which both the
dipped beam and main beam are oper-
ated from a single light source.
