8.4 Mounting Requirements
NOTE
Stated performance specifications for the GHA 15 can only be achieved when the system is
installed in accordance with all
the guidelines stipulated in this section and with all other
instructions given in this Installation Manual.
WARNING
This equipment should be installed and operated with minimum distance 20 cm between the
radiator and your body.
The installer will need to find the best mounting location and surface. Outline and Installation drawing
Figure 8-1
defines the hole pattern for mounting. This hole pattern is the same as the standard antenna
mounting pattern for most modern radar altimeters.
1. Location on Aircraft
: The GHA 15 must be mounted on a surface on the bottom of the aircraft near
the center point of pitch and roll rotation (this reduces the effect of momentary pitch and roll
altitude offsets/inaccuracies during approach and landing or while maneuvering the aircraft).
2. Angle of Antenna to Ground
: The GHA 15 must be mounted so the surface of the GHA 15 is
within +/- 6° of horizontal during level flight. If the adapter plates are manufactured to make sure
this angle is met, the adapters must not recess the unit surface within the skin of the aircraft. The
adapters must only extrude the GHA 15 surface outside the skin of the aircraft.
3. Mounting Surface
: The GHA 15 may be mounted on non-metallic surfaces or on a continuous
metallic surface.
4. Minimum Height
: The minimum unit height possible above ground while parked, taxiing, or at
aircraft touchdown is 20 inches for any aircraft.
5. Antenna Clearance Cones
: The location chosen for the GHA 15 must be free of aircraft projections
(landing gear, flaps, drainage vents, etc.…) within a 120° cone from the GHA 15 downward to
prevent locking onto false altitude returns. Consider all possible modes of aircraft operation when
establishing compliance with this guideline (e.g. – landing gear distances while in transition, flap
distances while fully extended, etc.).
6. Distance to Other Antennas
: It is encouraged to maximize GHA 15 separation from other
antennas aboard the aircraft when possible while meeting remaining guidelines in this section. See
also Section D.6.2
for further information.
8.4.1 Mounting/Doubler Plate
The installation of a doubler is essential to maintain structural integrity of the antenna installation. Some
aircraft may have existing provisions for a doubler (permanently attached to the skin) or backing plate
(removable). If the aircraft is not equipped with mounting provisions, refer to AC 43.13-2B for guidance
on manufacturing and installing doublers.
8.4.2 Grounding
Grounding of the GHA 15 is necessary for equipment operation.
NOTE
Good electrical bonding is important.
