Lubricate the Precision Rails
The rails and bearings are an open system that requires continuous lubrication. To avoid
breakdown of the lubrication, the precision rails must always have a thin film of oil across the
entire rail system and the bearings in the vehicles. This coating provides both lubrication and
environmental protection. The interval to resupply the lubrication depends on the distance
traveled, load on the vehicles, and environmental factors. Use 68 viscosity mineral oil, such as
Kluber 4 UH1-68N, to lubricate the bearing rails. Typically indications of lubrication break-
down are discoloration and excessive wear on the inner and outer bearing surfaces.
Initial Lubrication
During first-time start or when rails have been cleaned, make sure to lubricate all surfaces of
the rails and bearings. Continue to lubricate the rails as needed. There are several methods
available for lubricating the rails during operation.
Lubricate the rails manually when needed. See Manually Lubricate the Precision Rails
on page 362.
Install lubricators on the vehicles to provide continuous lubrication. See
Install/Replace the Lubricators on Precision Rail Vehicles on page 433.
Install a lubrication pump system such as catalog number C920600 to provide contin-
uous lubrication. See Install the Optional Precision Rail Lubrication Pump System on
page 293.
NOTE: It is normal for some of the oil to become black, but you must not see signs of rust-
ing or burnt oil, which are signs of missing lubrication.
IMPORTANT The precision rails must always be lubricated with a thin
coating of oil to provide proper operation and environmental
protection.
