If the indicator light comes on, the
Start-Stop
system
is not available or you have started the
engine automatically → page 123.
The status of the Start-Stop system can be shown
in the instrument cluster display.
Important conditions for the
automatic
switch-off
of the
motor

The driver is wearing a seat belt.
—
The driver's door is closed.
—
The front bonnet is closed.
—
The engine has reached a minimum temperature.
—
The passenger compartment temperature is
within the preset values and the air humidity is
not too high.

The parking assistance system (Park Assist) is
not activated.
—
ACC is not activated.
If the conditions for the engine to switch off
automatically are fulfilled during a vehicle standstill,
the engine may also be switched off subsequently,
e.g. if the defrosting/de-fogging function is
switched off.
Conditions that cause the engine to
restart
automatically
The engine can be started automatically in the
following cases:
—
If the passenger compartment becomes very hot
or very cold.
—
If the vehicle moves.
—
If the voltage of the 12-volt battery drops.
—
If the steering wheel moves.
In general, the following applies: the engine is
automatically restarted whenever this is necessary
for the situation in question and for the vehicle.
Conditions requiring the engine to be
started
manually
In the following cases the engine must be started
manually:
—
If the driver's door is opened.
—
If the front bonnet is opened.
Switching the

when driving through water.
Operation of the Start-Stop system in
combination
with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
If the adaptive cruise control (ACC) actively applies
the brakes until the vehicle comes to a standstill →
p. 140, the engine is switched off.
With ACC active, the engine is restarted in the
following cases:
—
If the accelerator is pressed.
—
When ACC re-regulates speed and distance.
—
When the vehicle in front moves away.
Even if the adaptive cruise control (ACC) is
deactivated, the engine also restarts if the vehicle in
front moves away.
Never turn off the engine while the vehicle is in
motion. This could result in loss of vehicle
control, accidents and serious injury.
•
Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners do not
work.
•
The brake booster does not work. To stop the
vehicle, the brake pedal must be pressed
harder.
