Using the start-up aid
Note and at the beginning of this
chapter
on page 234.
Fig. 162 Diagram for connecting the jumper cables.
Vehicle with discharged 12-volt battery, which
receives the starting aid.
Switch off the ignition in both vehicles
→ p. 116.
If necessary, open the cover of the 12 V
battery in the engine compartment → page
252.
Connect one end of the red jumper cable A to
the positive + pole of the discharged 12 V
battery of the vehicle → Fig. 162
→ p. 236.
Connect the other end of the red jumper cable B
to the positive + terminal of the vehicle battery
supplying the current → fig. 162 2 .
Connect one end of the black jumper cable C
preferably to a socket for the starting aid
(ground terminal) of the vehicle supplying the
current, otherwise to the engine block or to a
solid piece of metal bolted securely to the
engine block of this vehicle.
fig. 162 3 .
Connect the other end of the black jumper cable
D preferably to the socket for the starting aid
(ground terminal) of the vehicle with the 12-volt
battery discharged, otherwise to the engine
block or to a solid piece of metal bolted securely
to the engine block of this vehicle.
Vehicle with the 12-volt battery that sumi-
hicle → fig. 162
→ p. 236.
The current is supplied by the current source,
which provides the starting aid.
Suitable ground terminal: preferably a socket
for the starting aid (ground terminal), a solid
piece of metal bolted securely to the engine
block or the engine block itself.
The discharged 12-volt battery must be securely
connected to the on-board power supply.
Do not allow the vehicles to touch each other.
Otherwise, current may start flowing as soon as the
positive battery terminals are connected.
Make sure that the clamps connected to the poles
have sufficient metal contact.
If the engine does not start after 10 seconds, stop
the starter and try again after approx. 1 minute.
If the engine still does not start, call for
specialist assistance.
Connecting the jumper cables
The jumper cables may only be connected in the
order A - B - C - D fig. 162.
Never connect the black jumper cable to the
negative - pole of the 12-volt battery. If it is
connected to the negative terminal, this can lead
to an incorrect assessment of the battery status
within the vehicle's electronic system.
Position the jumper cables so that they cannot be
reached by any rotating parts of the engine
compartment.
Starting the engine
Start the engine of the vehicle supplying the
power and let it idle.
Start the engine of the vehicle with the
discharged 12-volt battery and wait 2 to 3
minutes until the engine "turns over".
Disconnect the jumper cables
If the dipped beam is on, switch it off before
disconnecting the ignition cables.
Switch on the fan of the air conditioning or
heating and ventilation system and switch on
the vehicle's heater with the 12-volt battery
discharged to reduce voltage peaks that may
occur when the cables are disconnected.
Disconnect the starter cables only in the order D
- C - B - A with the engines running.
fig. 162.
If necessary, close the battery cover.
Have the 12-volt battery serviced by a specialist
workshop.
