Transporting children safely
53
If children are not protected by a restraint system,
or not sufficiently protected, they can be seriously
or fatally injured. Therefore, please note the
following:
Do not transport any child under 12 years of
age (approx. 59 inches) or less than 150 cm tall
without using an appropriate child seat.
The country-specific regulations of the country
concerned must be taken into account. Please
note the country-specific provisions in this
regard.
Always protect children by using a suitable child
seat. The seat must be suitable for the height,
age and weight of the child.
child.
Never transport several children at the same
time in the same child seat.
Never carry a child or baby on your lap.
Never leave a child unattended in a child
seat.
Never allow children to travel without a child
restraint system or to stand up in the vehicle
while driving.
The child must not sit or kneel on the seats or be
in the wrong position while driving. This is
particularly important if the child is in the front
passenger seat. In the event of an accident, the
child could be seriously injured or cause injury
to others.
In order for the child seat to provide the best
possible protection, it is very important that
the seat belt is fitted as tightly as possible.
rightly. Always observe the child seat
manufacturer's instructions on the correct
positioning of the belt webbing. Incorrectly
fastened seat belts can cause injuries even in
minor accidents.
After an accident, replace child seats that were
in use at the time of the accident, as they
could
have suffered damage that is not perceptible to
the naked eye
view.
WARNING
Volkswagen recommends the use of child seats
from its range of accessories. These seats have
been designed and tested for use in Volkswagen
vehicles.

suitable for the child in question.
Rules on child seats
In countries that apply EU regulations, the ECE-R 44
or ECE-R 129 regulations apply to child seats → p.
53, Regulations for child seats. Both regulations
apply. Child seats approved in accordance with these
regulations bear the orange ECE type approval label.
The ECE label may contain, among other things, the
following information about the child seat:
Weight group
Size class
Type-approval category (universal, semi-uni-
versal, vehicle-specific or i-Size)
Approval number
In the case of child seats approved in accordance
with ECE-R 44, the eight-digit approval number on
the ECE type-approval label must begin with 03 or
04. This indicates that the seat is approved.
Older child seats with a type approval number
beginning with 01 or 02 are no longer permitted.
