Wheels and tyres
Always use the tyre pressure indicated on the
tyre sticker. Never exceed the maximum
pressure indicated on the tyre sidewall.
Avoid tilting the pressure gauge when placing it
on the valve stem. Otherwise, the tyre valve
may be damaged.
Always drive with the valve caps fully screwed
on.
Too low tyre pressure increases fuel
consumption.
Please note at the beginning of this chapter
on
page 259.

Tyre profile depth
Most driving situations require tyres with as high a
profile as possible. In addition, the tyre tread
depth should be uniform across all tyres, at least
per axle. This is especially true in wet or wintry
conditions.
In most countries, the tyres will have reached the
minimum permissible depth limit when a profile of
1.6 mm (1/16 inch), measured in the grooves next
to the wear indicators, remains (note country-
specific regulations). The depth of the tyre profile
should be uniform for all tyres, at least per axle →
.
Please note the legal provisions of the country in
question regarding the minimum permissible tread
depth of winter tyres.
and of all times.
Tyre wear indicators
Wear indicators indicate whether a tyre is worn.
Tyres should be replaced at the latest when the
tread depth reaches the wear indicators.
At the bottom of the tyre profile are 1.6 mm wear
indicators → fig. 183
(1/16 inch) in height. Their position is indicated by
markings on the sidewalls of the tyre.

Worn tyres represent a safety risk and can lead to
the loss of tyres.

NOTICE
Incorrect tyre pressure can cause tyres to leak air
or burst during driving. This could lead to serious
accidents and fatal injuries.
If the tyre pressure is too low, the tyre can
become so hot while driving that the tread can
become loose.
and the tyre burst.
Driving at excessive speeds or with the vehicle
overloaded can cause overheating and sudden
tyre damage,
which could even burst and lose tread, which
could lead to loss of vehicle control .
Incorrect tyre pressure reduces tyre life and
deteriorates the vehicle's driving behaviour.
Check the tyre pressure regularly: at least once
a month and additionally before every long
journey.
All tyres shall have the correct pressure
according to the load of the vehicle.
Never reduce the pressure increase in hot
tyres.
