Safety warnings for
work on the
engine compartment
Any accidental movement of the vehicle during
maintenance work could cause serious injury.
•
Never work under the vehicle without first
securing it to prevent it from rolling away.
When working underneath the vehicle
The vehicle must be on a level surface, the
wheels must be locked and, if necessary, the
vehicle key must be removed from the ignition
lock.
•
If work has to be carried out under the
vehicle, it must be additionally secured with
suitable stands. The jack is not suitable

and the generally applicable safety measures and
whether you have the appropriate tools,
equipment and operating fluids at your disposal. If
work is carried out improperly, this can lead to
serious injuries → p. 240. If necessary, have all work
carried out by a specialist workshop. Volkswagen
recommends that all work be carried out by a
Volkswagen dealer.
Before carrying out any work on the engine
compartment, always park the vehicle on firm
horizontal ground, taking all necessary safety
precautions.
If you are not sure what needs to be done,
have the necessary work carried out by a
specialist workshop. Failure to carry out the
work properly may result in serious injury.

Never open or close the front bonnet if vapour

severe hard braking. Always wait until you no
longer see or hear vapour or coolant escaping
from the engine compartment.
•
Always wait for the engine to cool down before
opening the front bonnet.
•
Touching hot engine or exhaust system
components can cause skin burns.
•
When the engine has cooled down, observe
the following before opening the front
bonnet:
—
Engage the electric parking brake and move
the selector lever to position P or the gear
lever to neutral.
—
Switch off the ignition, remove the key from
the ignition lock and store it in a safe place
at a safe distance from the vehicle so that,
especially if the vehicle is equipped with the
"Keyless Access" system, it is not possible to
switch on the ignition inadvertently and start
the combustion engine.
—
Always keep children away from the engine
compartment and never leave them
unattended.
•
When the engine is hot, its cooling system is
under pressure. Never open the cap of the
fuel expansion tank.
The engine coolant must be drained from the
engine when the engine is hot. Failure to do so
could cause coolant to splash out and result in
severe burns and other injuries.
—
Turn the expansion tank cap slowly and
carefully anticlockwise and at the same
time apply slight pressure to the expansion
tank cap.
—
Always protect your face, hands and arms
from the coolant or hot vapour with a large,
thick cloth.
•
When replenishing operating fluids, avoid
getting them on engine components or the
exhaust system. These fluids could pro-
