The damage sustained by the vehicle in an
accident, its absence or the cost of repairing it is
not necessarily an indication of whether or not an
airbag should have been deployed. Since crashes
can occur in many different situations, it is
impossible to define a palette of reference speeds
and values. It is therefore not possible to cover all
conceivable types of collisions and collision angles
that would trigger airbags. Some important
factors in triggering the airbags are the nature of
the object (hard or soft) against which the impact
occurs, the angle of the collision and the speed of
the vehicle.
Airbags only supplement the function of the three-
point seat belts in certain accidents where the
vehicle deceleration is high enough to trigger the
airbags. The airbags only deploy once and only
under certain circumstances. The seat belts are
always there to provide protection in situations
where the airbags should not deploy or have already
deployed, e.g. when a vehicle, after a first collision,
collides with another vehicle or is hit by another
vehicle.
The airbag system is part of the vehicle's overall
passive safety system. The airbag system can only
provide optimum protection in combination with
properly fitted seat belts and correct
occupant
posture

Vehicle security system components
Taken together, the following vehicle equipment
constitutes the vehicle safety system to reduce the
risk of serious injury
and fatal. Some equipment may not be fitted to
the vehicle as an option or may not be available
in some countries.
—
Optimised seat belts in all seating positions
—
Pretensioners on driver's and front
passenger's seat belts
—
Force limiters on the driver's and front
passenger's seat belts and, if applicable, on the
rear side seat belts
—
Front seat belt height adjusters for front seat
belts
—
Red warning lamp and, if necessary,
seat-belt
status indicator
—
Front airbags for driver and passenger
—
Driver and front passenger side airbags
—
Head airbags on both sides of the vehicle
—
If necessary, airbag for the driver's knees
—
Yellow airbag indicator light
—
Yellow PASSEN- GER AIR BAG indicator
light in the centre console
—
Yellow PASSEN- GER AIR BAG indicator
light in the centre console
—
Control units and sensors
—
Optimised, height-adjustable, anti-whiplash
headrests
—
Adjustable steering column
—
If necessary, anchorage points for child seats on
the rear side seats and on the front passenger's
seat
—
If applicable, attachment points for the top
tether belt (Top Tether) of the child seats
—
Automatic deactivation of the high-voltage
system in the event of an accident with driver's
frontal airbag deployment
Situations in which the front, side, head and
rollover
airbags do not deploy:
—
If the ignition is switched off at the time of a
collision.
—
In the event of a collision at the front of the
vehicle, if the deceleration measured by the
control unit is too low.
—
In case of minor side collisions.
—
In case of rear-end collisions.
—
In the event of the vehicle overturning.
—
When the impact speed is lower than the
reference value programmed in the control unit.
