Swallowing a 20 mm diameter battery or other
button cell batteries can cause serious or even
fatal injuries in a very short time.
Keep the vehicle key and battery-operated key
fobs out of the reach of children.
If you suspect that someone has swallowed a
battery,
seek medical attention immediately.

Remove the emergency key p. 66.
Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the vehicle
key through the outer guide of the emergency
key approx. 1 cm in the direction of the arrow
fig. 56 1 .
Turn the screwdriver clockwise until the cover
opens → fig. 56 2 .
Slide the lid in the direction of the arrow
fig. 56
and
remove it.
Remove the battery from the battery
compartmentfig. 57 by levering it out.
Insert a new button cell battery into the
battery compartment → .
Press the cover onto the housing → fig. 56 3 .
Keep the emergency key p. 66.
Dispose of the exhausted battery in an
environmentally friendly manner.
If the battery is incorrectly replaced, the key
may be damaged.
The use of unsuitable batteries can damage the
key. Therefore, always replace the exhausted
battery with a new one of the same voltage, size
and specification.
When installing the battery, observe polarity.
Batteries of the type used in the remote
control of the vehicle key can be used in
the remote control of the vehicle key.
contain perchlorate. This may require handling and
storage.
special precautions. Please observe all legal
regulations regarding the handling and disposal of
these batteries. We recommend that you have this
work carried out by a Volkswagen dealer or
specialist workshop.
Synchronising the vehicle key
If the vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked with the
key, synchronise the key or replace the key's
button battery → p. 66, → p. 66.
Synchronise the vehicle key:
Unfold the key handle or remove the emergency
key.
If necessary, remove the driver's door handle
cover → page 71.
Press the key on the key.
Unlock the vehicle with the key stick.
Open the driver's door. If the vehicle is
equipped with an anti-theft alarm, it will be
triggered immediately → p. 73.
Switch on the ignition.
This completes the synchronisation.
Problems and solutions
The vehicle cannot be locked or unlocked.
The remote control does not work properly due to
obstacles, adverse weather conditions, transmitters
in the vicinity of the vehicle using the same
frequency band, e.g. a mobile phone device, or a
dead button battery.
OR: the central locking system has been briefly
switched off as overload protection.
Close the driver's door.
OR: Synchronise the vehicle key p. 67.
OR: Change the button battery in the vehicle key
→ p. 66, → p. 66.
Control lamp does not flash
If the indicator light in the remote control key
does not flash when the buttons are pressed, the
button battery in the remote control key must be
replaced → page 66, → page 66.
Additional or replacement keys are available
from Volkswagen dealers.
